This book contains a good selection of werewolf stories from the early Victorian to the present day. Some of the older material is a little hard going, but it's more than made up for by the rest, which include some really excellent tales. Well worth the price.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By A. C. Parsons on 6 Sep 2010
Format: Paperback
As the title suggests this book didn't dovetail with my expectations, but then it never really could have done given that the 21st century conception of a werewolf is quite different to that of the 19th and early 20th.

Variety is the key to a good anthology and The Werewolf Pack succeeds in this regard withan interesting mixture here both in terms of story and werewolf type.

I would agree that The Clay Party is perhaps the pick of the bunch, though Among The Wolves and Gabriel-Ernest run it close.

As a slight warning to potential readers I would say that the writing styles, although distinct and different, are very much of their time in so far as they can be quite long-winded with the prose also being far more complex than we often see today. If you've ever read a classic novel from the 19th century and not enjoyed it because of the style then you may want to consider giving this collection a miss. But, to do so would mean missing out on what is both an enjoyable and informative read.

Significantly more hits than misses and an instructive glimpse into both the old mythology of and the evolution of the fiction surrounding werewolves. Excellent value for money.

Score: 7/10

I bought this book while traveling through Romania and Transylvania in a big Mall just outside the airport in Bucharest. I like to read sumptuous short stories while traveling and was very pleased to find this collection of tales I've never read. The weirdest in the collection by far is "The Other Side" by Count Stenbock, a strange account of people with human faces and wolf bodies and wolf women with long golden hair seducing a boy to the other side of a stream that divides the supernatural world and reality. The other stories are thought provoking as well between plane, train and bus hops. It's not a collection of pulp-popcorn fiction for quick thrills, for each story takes its time to seduce the reader and develop. Buy it before you go abroad--it will be cheaper.
