Product Description

Product Description

Sometimes, all you need is a little push. After acclaimed singer-songwriter Brendan Benson released his 2012 album What Kind of World, his manager suggested he launch a monthly singles series. He was a bit hesitant at first, but eventually he came around. And now, just a year after What Kind of World, Benson is back with You Were Right, which collects both the releases from the series as well as reworked versions of songs that didn't quite fit on his previous albums. You Were Right finds Benson squarely in his jangly power-pop groove, while also finding room for him to explore his more experimental impulses. Benson recorded You Were Right in his own Readymade Studios, and will release the album on his own Readymade Records in the US with label partner Lojinx releasing it in the UK & Europe. Being in charge of both the production and release gave Benson the peace of mind to make exactly the record he wanted, all on his own terms. From his home in Nashville, Tennessee, here is Benson on being the boss and finding his place in the music industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raconteurs Benson was right all along 25 Nov 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Brendan Benson's latest record MUST establish him as a household name? Well perhaps not but this excellent new record is that rare beast a pop record with no filler. Benson's ability to write 3-4 minute pop songs with hooks, melodies and astute lyrics is now putting him in the premier league. His outing with The Racontuers was a success but as a solo artist is where Brendan should be really making his name. BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of excellent, immediate songs 2 Dec 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I was quite surprised to see a new album from Brendan Benson, so soon after 2012's "What Kind Of World", an album that I thought was decent, but certainly not one of his best. I then read that it was the product of compiling the results from an acclaimed monthly singles project and became very interested to hear it. When it finally rattled through my letter box and I listened to it for the first time, I thought it was pretty good, but nothing that special. A few listens later and the songs have really leaped out at me, it's an excellent album! Many people, when speaking about Benson, speak about the Raconteurs, but I'd already bought a few albums of his before he got together with Jack White for a couple of superb albums and my favourites so far are "Lapalco" (2002) and "My Old, Familiar Friend" (2009), but, seeing as the other two are pretty great too, there's no such thing as a bad album by Brendan. He has this innate melodic indie-pop sensibility that shines through on any project he works on, including co-writing a few songs with Jake Bugg on his rather fantastic latest album, "Shangri La".

There are plenty of brilliant songs on this indie/powerpop gem. The album kicks off brightly with the catchy "It's Your Choice", which features a bagpipe-like sound to good effect, "I Don't Wanna See You Anymore" oozes class, with bursts of brass, organ and a beautifully pained vocal from Brendan and "I'll Never Tell" is a melodic beauty with a supremely memorable chorus. "She's Trying To Poison Me" is another classic composition, a slightly dark, humorous tale where the music alternates between jaunty and dreamy and which sees Benson slightly bemused about why he's putting up with this woman trying to kill him: "She's not exactly the girl of my dreams".

4.0 out of 5 stars This is what you need 11 Jan 2014
Format:Audio CD
It's not since getting into Elliott Smith that I've had a similar experience. I've known of BB for a bit and heard a few things but this is the first album by an artist for quite a while that I have played end to end twice in succession and have to pull myself away to say "now for something else". Recommended, with Rejuvenate Me and I'll Never Tell being personal favourites. Give it a go. Like the cover too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of Songs, Paving the Road to a Fresh Start for BB 13 Dec 2013
By D-Rich - Published on
Format:Audio CD
When I first heard that Brendan Benson was coming out with a new album only one year after his last release, I was a bit worried that the songwriting was going to feel rushed. When I saw the track list, however, it all made sense. Over half of these songs have existed on the internet (and my iPod) in demo form for quite some time, dating as far back as 2006 (Swallow You Whole was uploaded to Benson's Myspace page under the name "untitled" back then). You Were Right is mostly a collection of reworked and re-recorded Benson songs that didn't "make the cut" over the course of his career. I initially found this concept to be a turnoff, but it actually ends up being an extremely varied and fun listening experience. Unless you're a hardcore Brendan Benson fan, you'll never know that all these songs aren't technically brand-new, so this is more of an interesting fact than a bad thing.

The songs themselves are very much a mixed bag. From the country-glazed "Diamond" to the humorous "She's Trying to Poison Me," you'll continue to find new sounds around every corner. Some true highlights exist here, with "I'll Never Tell" being the stand out rocker of the bunch. "Oh My Love" and "Swimming" are BB at the top of his lyrical and melodic game, reminding us of a time when song craft was more important than image in the music industry.

You Were Right is a welcome addition to Benson's already impressive catalog, even if it isn't his finest record to date. While some songs are better than others, there are no "low" points here, and the "highs" are as good as Benson has ever been.

With this collection of songs out, Benson most likely has cleaned out his songwriting closet. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does next with the fresh white canvas that sits before him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Album By Brendan Benson 14 Jan 2014

Jack White may get a lot of the notice when it comes to The Raconteurs but every member of the band contributes. It was Brendan that wrote "Steady As She Goes", for example.

This album is another in a succession of Benson's solo albums that bring every note to life and each song standing on it's own as a classic tune. Think Cheap Trick meets the Beatles meets Butch Walker meets…

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this album! 4 Jan 2014

I am a big Brendan Benson fan dating back to the 1990's when a friend who knew Brendan took me to the record store in Ann Arbor and told me I had to purchase One Mississippi, which I did. Still one my all time favorite albums. Anyway, I haven't been keeping up with what he has been doing for a couple of years. Just decided to see if he had put out anything new ,and saw You Were Right and took a chance and bought it.

Oh my god, I have only had it two days and I am totally in love with it! It's really a great album with all kinds of variety-very smooth sounding. Every time I listen to it, which has been often as I am on vacation, I find a new favorite song or hear something that I hadn't noticed before. Still very much Brendan Benson, but with lots of other cool sounds to go along with him. I can't even list all of my favorite tracks now, but the ones that come to mind are #4-Diamond,#12-Oh My Love, and # 15- Red, White and Blues. I even got my ten year old daughter to listen to it, and she likes Red, White and Blues the best.

Bravo Brendan! He deserves so much more recognition than he gets!
