Product Description

An edifying must-see that has received accolades at film festivals the world over, 'We Were Here' is the first film to take a deep and reflective look back at the arrival and impact of a definitive chapter in a city s queer history. It explores how the inhabitants were affected by, and how they responded to, a calamitous epidemic.

Though a San Francisco-based story, We Were Here extends beyond San Francisco and beyond AIDS itself. It speaks to our capacity as individuals to rise to the occasion, and to the incredible power of a community coming together with love, compassion, and determination.

In the face of adversity they stood strong and united.

This is their story.

5.0 out of 5 stars You should watch this 6 Oct 2012

This is a documentary, not a feature film, but it isn't dry, dull and worthy. It is the first hand stories of people who were around in San Francisco in the late seventies, the eighties and the nineties - people who dealt with the effects of HIV and AIDS at a time when there was little understanding of the virus. The stories may make you cry, and they may make you laugh. What really affected me was how little we know of who made the breakthroughs in treatment and how, and how complacent we have become about the subject. These people are inspirational, and everyone should hear their story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must see 3 Feb 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I know what I think I know about early gay liberation, the development of gay culture and community in NYC and SF and the crises that was AIDS; but this made me think again. This is a remarkable and must see story of a time, made all the more real by the commentary throughout of individuals who were there, lived it, responded to the shocking changes in their personal lives and community, and made a huge difference in their own way which carries on to this day as a testament to their courage and integrity. As a gay man , closely involved with my own Lgb@t community in N Ireland, I found myself deeply struck by the feeling that at that time 70's-80's and beyond, when liberation and freedom was being achieved, this shocking ravaging of a generation of brave, talented people living life to the full must have been absolutely bewhildering. Yet out of devestating tragedy, and loss grew networks, support and a sense of community I wish we had today. There were heroes, some of them who lost their battle, but they are not forgotten, for a while yet. This is a must see for everyone, an unforgettable film which is as much uplifting as it is deeply sorrowful.
