Make no mistake, we live in a vast, uniform musical climate nowadays... a strict, limited number of so-called "genres" exist in order to allow uninspired "bands" the option to mass-market their identikit offerings. This is not criticism, just unadulterated fact - You can seek out those who dare to do something different and find yourself hurtling towards a wall marked "Top 40 Chart Territory" before you can even wrinkle your nose in disgust. Well, luckily for some this is not an impossible task, as Gabby Young and Other Animals are here, they're out-and-about, they're going to save you from the grind of workaday music. Make no mistake about it.

"We're All In This Together" is an amazing album, a work that Feels like a blast of Pre-Raphaelite colour and glory in contrast to the Paul Klees that most musicians tend to aspire to. A full, deep sound that combines brass, warm guitar chords and of course the astonishing voice of Gabby Young herself bring forth an image of Vaudeville, Swing and Folk being pushed into the 21st Century and away from the annals of History where they had almost been relegated to. Varying between heartfelt platitudes and high-tempo numbers where the animals really let rip, there is something for everybody here, young and old alike.

Having listened to this album many-a-time now, I can truthfuly say that there are times when only this album is the perfect soundtrack; and that is the best praise you can give any music, trust me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gabby is pure talent! 5 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was lucky enough to see Gabby Young and Other Animals open for Al Stewart at the Triple Door in Seattle last year. I have been hooked since then. So it was very good news to hear that Gabby and her wonderful band have finally come out with a cd (the earlier download only of an ep called "Bear With Me" precedes this and is also wonderful.) And as with the ep, this is no dissapointment either.
Gabby has the most breathtaking voice and every song here is a delight. The vocal arrangements sound really sophisticated, and the instrumentation is acoustic and not over the top, creating a very mellow and sweet sound.
So far I cannot pick a favourite song, as they are all great. The sound is remiscent of Mama Cass Elliot, The New Vaudville Band (remember 'Winchester Cathedral"?), and newer artists like Norah Jones and Madeline Pereoux. I sure hope that this band has much success, they definately possess the talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gabby Young & Other Animals - utterly amazing. 6 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
I was lucky enough to catch Gabby Young & Other Animals performing at Standon Calling festival last year and they completely blew me away. Gabby is energetic and captivating with a quirky eccentric style, with a voice that is just amazing. I must say it is great to see and listen to an artist with real talent and individuality these days.

I recommend this album to anyone who likes their music, orginal and bold with masses of pure talent to boot. They are far above the pop rubbish that floods the charts and radio playlists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Guardian Review (Dec '10) 9 Dec 2010
By Chris
Format:Audio CD
One of the highlights of this year's Womad was a wild, red-haired British singer backed by a band that included brass, banjo and accordion, and moved effortlessly from ragtime and jazz to Balkan influences, sometimes in the same song. Gabby Young has been praised for her live shows, but her recordings have in the past only been available through her own label. Now her most recent album is being rereleased, with four added tracks, on World Connection, which also has Mariza on its roster; with luck, this will bring Young greater attention. After all, she is a versatile, classically trained singer and an inventive, surprising songwriter with a barrage of global influences. On the opening track, Young switches from slinky jazz balladry to a brassy romp, then back, with a fine sense of theatrics and dynamics; she slows down for the cool, banjo-backed title track. The bonus songs include Snakebite, which mixes circus themes and furious brass, and the soulful Mole, from her debut album four years ago. (Robin Denselow)

This album is haunting, beautiful, instrumentally complex and the voice is simply indescribable. You just have to listen. So different, so unusual. I bought this after the Guardian described them as a highlight of WOMAD festival which is pretty much unheard of for an English act.

Everyone i've played this to loves it and it's one of those "ooh, where did you find this?" CDs.

I personally guarantee you wont regret buying this. Favourite album of the year without a doubt. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fall In Love With Music All Over Again 7 April 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I don't know where to start with Ms Young really. I had to stand in to take my stepsons to see a live performance at the Civic in Barnsley when their mum took ill. I didn't want to go. I huffed and puffed like Kevin & Perry, I mean, I am Mr Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Magnum (and for those who have some real rock taste, Eloy). This jazz big band fusion stuff just isn't for me I argued. But I went anyway.

We were sat on the front row, and when the song started and this very beautiful but strangely attired woman came on to stage to the not quite jazz that I was expecting, I thought- "What is this then?"

One song later, I was entranced.

By the end of the gig, I was totally lost and in awe and realised that this was a Top 5 music event. And I've been to some major gigs in my 30 years of seeing live music. Gabby doesn't just sing her songs, she becomes the song. She tells the story by being the story. If this all sounds a bit tree-huggy, you'll have to just go see for yourself.

I'm not going to try and describe the music because it has many influences and styles and, quite honestly, defies catergorisation- just try it for yourself. What I am going to describe is that this album is an event, it is music for the soul and mind and heart and it really doesn't matter what sort of music you like, Gabby and the Animals will entrance you as well. And this album is the next best thing to seeing Gabby and the band live.

Everything about it screams quality. The packaging, the colouring, the photos- and then you get to the music itself. Gabby and the boys are amazing songwriters and performers, and the production quality is superb; it catches the expertise but also the energy of the band, something CDs sometimes fail to do.
