Wenglish: the dialect of the South Wales Valleys by Robert Lewis has filled a linguistic hole. The famous Talk Tidy books (by John Edwards) introduced Wenglish to the world and this book gives a more in-depth picture. I grew up in a small South Wales valley and Wenglish (although we did not refer to it as such) was our everyday speech. Our dialect was regarded as poor quality English, and it has been enlightening to read Robert Lewis' scholarly repudiation of that view. His linguistic credentials are impeccable yet he has decided not to use the phonetic alphabet in order to make the book accessible to the 'general reader' - for which much thanks! This reference book includes a history of the dialect, a glossary and a grammar with opportunities to 'teach yourself Wenglish, if so minded. Students of linguistics, dialects or simply readers who were brought up in the South Wales valleys will all be able to enjoy and use this superb little book.
Ta butt, I do enjoy readin stuff like 'is no end - jonic!
