This book is well written and a very good companion to those cruising the Llangollen Canal. It's full of useful information. The journey times are helpful with planning the days journey and allow for the gentle pace that the boater should adhere to if he/she wants to get the most out of this type of holiday. Read it before your holiday and it will enhance the experience. It's worth mentioning Amazons delivery of the product was excellentWelsh Waters: Shropshire Union, Llangollen, Monmouthshire and Brecon, Montgomery Canals (Pearson's Canal Companion)

Full of clear, easy to follow maps, lots of information about the canals and anything of interest beside the canals including places to visit and eat. We have used these for years and would not use anything else. They are regularly updated as well to keep up with changes on the canals and towpaths. Definitely recommended.

This is the bible for canal holidays. Clear symbols all accurate and good explanations of where to visit. Excellent recommendations for places to eat and shop. I recommend anyone booking a canal holiday in the UK to use the Peason's Canal Companion relating to the canal you are travelling on.

This book is indispensible! For holiday planning, accurate information on what is around the next corner and advice about canalside facilities, I could not do without it. It lay open on the counter in front of me whenever I was steering.

For a first time canal user, this was an invaluable book. It gave relatively accurate times for you to get from one point to another so you could plan your trip in advance. All of those important landmarks like moorings and water points were marked in detail. The written descriptions were amusing and useful. This is an excellent guidebook and should you be embarking on a trip I would definitely advise you having a copy by your tiller at all times.

Having purchased another Pearsons Canal companion a few years back, this book was my first choice. Concise details of the canals listed together with all the necessary information you need for a canal holiday including pubs! They are so good that you can even follow the route along the pages of the book. Would choose another book in the series if thinking of having another canal boat holiday. Would recommend them to friends and family.

It's a few years since I last went on the canals and then the Nicholson Guides seemed to be the best. This year we went on the Llangollen Canal, so I bought both the Nicholson and the Canal Companion (reviewed here).

While Nicholson is geographically correct in showing all the maps pointing North on all pages, it is much harder to follow the route and it doesn't help that the page sequence seems to be backwards too.

In contrast, the Canal Companion shows the route running across each page in sequence. It highlights the details you need for navigation and route planning and also gives valuable information about the places, shops and pubs along the route. I'm a convert to the Canal Companion series and would not hesitate to buy one for another canal route in future.

When the book arrived, I was shocked by how small it was! However, this did not detract from it's usefulness.
Thoroughly detailed and an excellent aid for us on our first ever narrow boat holiday.

It's well worth getting this book in advance of your holiday in order to do some journey planning but bear in mind the following point.
There are within the guide, approximate travelling times for each section, this is extremely useful but I found it difficult to match these times. Maybe this was because I was new to handling a boat. So if you are new to canal boats, I would suggest, especially for the first few days, you need to allow more time than they indicate.

Worth taking a clear plastic bag to put it in should you be unfortunate to have a day of rain.
