Probably the best book available for those wishing to learn the welsh language. The tapes certainly make pronunciation easier and for a change there is equal pronunciation help for North & South Walian. Definitely worth a go for learning a wonderful language

This is a thoughtful, conscientious attempt to take a complete beginner right through to quite an advanced level of Welsh. The course is structured rather around different situations (shopping, restaurants, sports, illnesses etc) than around grammatical points; these are introduced bit by bit in parallel with the subject areas. By and large this approach works well and the course is well laid out and easy to follow.

But there are a few shortcomings. The tapes are good as far as they go, but some important texts (including ones introducing new vocabulary) in the book are not recorded on the tapes - this is a pity. Also there are gaps in the presentation of grammar. For example, the structure of the future tense of verbs is half-introduced and then abandoned, while subsequent exercises clearly expect the student to have familiarised him or herself with this aspect of grammar. It is almost as if a chunk had dropped out of the book.

This is nevertheless a good book which I have found most useful.

This is actually an excellent language guide, well laid out, logical, digestible. The themes used in the chapters take everyday situations and use them to help you build a vocabulary and understanding of the grammar - from saying hello, to telling people what you do for a living, to conducting more and more complex conversations. It would not be advisable to buy the book without obtaining tapes or some form of audio learning system as well. Welsh is a language you have to see written (and if you're in Wales, you'll see a lot of written Welsh), but it is also a language you have to hear spoken if you are to grasp the inflections and pronunciation. An excellent book to help you build vocabulary and grammar ... but make sure you get that audio back-up as well!
