This review is from: The Welsh Rivers: The Complete Guide to Canoeing and Kayaking the Rivers of Wales (Paperback)
Chris Sladden dedicated 17 years of his life to writing this book and it shows. If you can get a boat to float on it, it's in this book. From the tip of Angelsey to the Bristol Channel, Chris has paddled them all.
He writes in a clear, concise style, presenting the river as a paddler would find it. The quick reference at the top of each description makes selecting and then finding the rivers easy and the prose underneaths captures not only the physical details of the river but the feel as well. The usual star grading system is used to rate the rivers but this is supplemented with notes such as "adventurous" or "scenic" to give you some idea as to why the river gets its stars.
The accuracy is amazing, not only is each important feature mentioned but lines for low, medium and high levels are often suggested, along with details of unexpected currents or rocks. The author obviously knows the rivers very well and is often able to predict where trees and debris might be jammed.
Any canoeist who even thinks about paddling in Wales should have this book.
