Book Description

3 Jan 1998

One of the most important inspirational writers of our time, and an internationally acclaimed spiritual guide, Anthony de Mello here presents a way toward peace of mind, inner power, and joy through simple spiritual exercises that blend the ancient traditions of the East with the psychological and philosophical perspectives of the West. Wellsprings is intended to guide us to a deeper appreciation of the physical and mystical realms within us.

In these pages, numerous aspects of self-awareness are explored that for many people are often left uncultivated in the rapid pace of modern life. In the tradition of the great spiritual leaders of the past, de Mello directs the whole person toward a state of harmony and grace -- in heart and mind, body and soul. This book's great insights into our universal spiritual yearnings have had tremendous resonance the world over, and its simple lessons of the spirit have touched the lives of millions.

Wellsprings is indeed a book for everyone who thirsts for inner growth -- regardless of age, religion, or cultural background. If read carefully, its exercises will lead from mind to body, from thought to fantasy and feeling. It is then that we are both freed and empowered, awakened to reality and our real selves. For, as the teacher explains, "in solitude your self is given back to you."

5.0 out of 5 stars Find Peace in Troubled Times 10 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Anthony DeMello is superb in his manor of helping the reader find the lost, confused and at times sad individual and transporting him or her to a place of peace and tranquility. Wellsprings offers many short medition exercises. I really enjoy the contempletive peacefulness that is awakened with each essay that is SLOWLY read and concentrated upon. I take with me everywhere I go. Even though I have only owned it for a short time, it has the appearence of being decades old. I really have made it looked LOVED. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have and still do

4.0 out of 5 stars Wellsprings 2 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
I found Anthony de Mello's writing to be wonderful soul food and deeply moving. In my opinion it is both comforting and challenging sound spiritual direction and I would recommend it as a tool to anyone who is trying to reconnect with their true self and their Source. As he recommends himself the exercises are best practised within a group.

5.0 out of 5 stars An aid to Prayer 4 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a very versatile book, in which a number of exercises are given under various headings. Each exercise can be accomplished in 20 to 45 minutes according to how much time you have. They need not be done in sequence.
I have used them for private prayer as well as with groups and found them equally useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars no wonder the Church is afraid of spirituality 23 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback
This continues the style of his previous book, The Song of the bird. There are plenty of stories, poems and reflections for group and individual lectio divina and for journalling.

Like his book Sadhana, there are meditations of one's own corpse, if you risk doing it.

There is a good section where you imagine this is your last day before you die and you written an examen of your whole life. It is broken down into 16 sections e.g. `These convictions I have lived by....' Finish the sentence. I found this exercise very helpful.

One of my favourites: THE KINGDOM: I imagine that I enter a deep dark cave where I am totally alone. I sit down in a corner to meditate on life. Today I choose to see life in its brokenness and uselessness and waste. I imagine flowers growing by a roadside and I see the seeds that never made it to the surface of the ground, the tender shoots that sprouted only to be trampled on by people, devoured by cattle, scorched by the heat of the sun. At every stage of growth thousands must perish for one flower that will bloom. I see trillions of wasted eggs and foetuses destroyed and babies born to perish for every human that survives.

I see the wasted struggles of millions who aspire to be actors, writers, political leaders, saints, and end in failure . . .for the handful that arrives. I have myself arrived at where I am today through countless wasted hours of boredom, useless conversations, pastimes, incapacitating sickness, or sufferings I was fool enough to bring upon myself. Through energy I squandered on unproductive planning, stillborn projects, fruitless undertakings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pay attention to this man's writings! 30 Jun 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Anthony DeMello actually was able to bring eastern mysticism and methods of meditation, into the Vatican and teach it to the jesuits! If you know anything about catholic hirarchy, that is quiet a feet. But once you read this, one of my favorots, or other books by Fr. DeMello you'll see that what he says and teaches is so pure, innocent, true, relevant, and REAL, that you see why he recieved such a wide audiance. I loved working the exercises in his book. Not from a Catholic point of view, but from a Meditatiors position. I read his books often when I need to refocus. Enjoy :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars No. 2 on my Top 10 List of Books of Illustrations: 3 Jan 2005
By Fred W Hood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
After ending the year of 2004 re-reading deMello stories from the Song of the Bird I picked up WELLSPRINGS to compare them! My eyes were first caught by "The Fountain, "The Education and "The Current. "The Education focused upon Peter's Betrayal when he saw that 'Look' from Jesus! "I shrink, at first from his loving gaze, for it is too forgiving... I must sustain that look if I am to learn to look at other people the way he looks at me."

Then I moved back into the deMello section on his Topic of LIFE. First I centered upon "The Awakening, "The Deliverance, and "The Symphony" all really interested me for their under-lining! Since Tony deMello often did in his short life, he meditated upon his own Death! In "Deliverance" an underlined phrase: "And so it must be: Life must go on." On closing of this longer meditation, I added the quotation from my old friend, Bob Farrall: "Until my Brother died - I did not face my mortality!"

Many stars & pluses for Contemplation & Meditation in-telling stories. Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

5.0 out of 5 stars Profound and Powerful!!! 23 Sep 2010
By Steven J. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I can't reccomend this book highly enough. In his usual fashion, Anthony DeMello takes his readers on a deep and profound spiritual journey through a series of 1-2 page spiritual exercises. MUST HAVE!! (Just make sure you devote the time to these pages to get maximum benefit, it is contemplative and rich if you give it a chance)

5.0 out of 5 stars A conversation with your body 27 Feb 2011
By Taffeta Phrases - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My favorite meditation is "The Vessel" in which de Mello invites you to have a conversation with your body. He asks your body to say what it resents and even fears about you. He asks you to respond with how you feel about your body and then to continue the conversation.

He ask you what it means to you to know that your body is The Body of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit. What would it be like to treat your body as being the body of your beloved?

He asks you to listen as your body speaks some words of wisdom and to listen to what Jesus has to say to your body.

This meditation changed the querulous, annoyed, ashamed attitude I had towards my body. The transformation in attitude is typical of what is achieved by Anthony de Mello's meditations. They are so enjoyable and so rich spiritually. I'm so glad I found this book.
