2.0 out of 5 stars Missed opportunity, 17 Jun 2005

This review is from: Wellesz - Bakchantinnen Die, 'The Bacchae' (Audio CD)
Orfeo are to congratulated on issuing a CD of on opera by Wellesz, but in many respects this is a disappointment. The recording as a whole is rather distanced, but with the voices too far forward: as a result the orchestral textures sound even more monochrome than necessary (Wellesz, it must be admitted, is not the most seductive of orchestrators). The chorus, which has a lot to do, is competent, but some of the solo singing is lacking in character and is in some cases technically insecure. But the major drawback is the fact that there are numerous musical cuts that compromise Wellesz's vision. Since this appears to have been a studio recording, and there would have been no difficulty in fitting the complete work onto two CDs, these interventions are to be deplored. Wellesz surely deserves better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Selected highlights, 29 April 2011
This review is from: Wellesz - Bakchantinnen Die, 'The Bacchae' (Audio CD)
So I bought this in despite of the review.....................and yes, whilst some of the Bacchae are better than no Bacchae at all, I think this should be described as 'highlights from' or 'abridged' or, in the native language, 'Querschnitt'.

And even then the power & majesty of Wellezs's vision remains, especially for those blissfully unaware of the mutilation done to the score.

If anyone involved in this production would care to justify their actions, or to explain why no such justification appears anywhere on the accompanying notes, I should be pleased to hear from them.
