Biography

Modern Classics; the title said it all, really. A little tongue in cheek, perhaps, but he had a point. In just eight years as a solo artist, Paul Weller had created a body of work that not only matched the very best of his previous groups’ output, but also put him toe to toe – and frequently head and shoulders above – the crop of new bands claiming him as a hero. He’d ... Read more in Amazon's Paul Weller Store

Product Description

BBC Review

In pre-file sharing days of yore an artist's forays into radio session work or broadcasts of live shows were the mainstay of 'evil' bootleggers. At record fairs across the land you'd find vinyl and cds stuffed with 'rarities', culled from FM airwaves. Thus there's a good chance that any self-respecting Wellerite over the age of 35 will already own a chunk of this generous four-disc helping of Steve Marriott's greatest fan. But now, with the Beeb's vaults cracked open we can all enjoy the more intimate and immediate outpourings of everyone's favourite mod.

Historically it's fascinating to see how age (or ageism) pushed Weller's sesions from Radio 1 to Radio 2 after 1997. The box set's booklet time and again reiterates, through fellow musician's quotes, how driven Weller is. A man constantly dissatisfied with his muse as well as deeply in love with the whole process of music making. This goes some way in explaining how some of these cuts come from sources as unexpected as Johnnie Walker's Drivetime show or Janice Long's late night spot. Like many of his generation Weller knew the importance of BBC sessions in allowing him to both communicate with his audience while experimenting and covering songs which he, himself, admired. Thus, as well as stripped down versions of classics from Wild Wood, Stanley Road and the rest, we hear Rose Royce's Wishing On A Star, Manfred Mann's pretty Flamingo and Ronnie Laine's classic The Poacher, all rendered with the Woking rasp.

The second half of this exemplary set springs from live dates covering a smaller period (1991-1998) and all originally broadcst on Radio 1. Unlike the studio sessions this is more standard fare, gleaned from albums rather than containing cover versions. However he still manages to squeeze in one of his earliest hero's hits - Pete Townshend's Magic Bus - into Bull Rush during his his Royal Albert Hall gig from '91. Also it's interesting to hear him still including old Style Council numbers (Speak Like A Child) or Jam numbers (Tales From The Riverbank) reinvented in his setlists as well. And while the live sets may lack the intimacy and variety of material they more than make up for it in passion. As Tim Burgess says: "He throws everything into each performance. There is never the sense of him going through the motions".

This is why for Weller completists this box (also available with a DVD) is absolutely essential, but for everyone else it's a treasure trove of soul and intent as well. --Dennis O'Dell

Paul Weller is one of those eternally young, classy statesmen whom one always feels rather jealous of. These 39 tracks are proof that he can do little wrong. Of course, his own classics are treated to both bare-boned reworkings for different BBC sessions as well as sharp-dressed, exciting concerts. But it's the covers that really are the taste-treat here.Check out the bluesy Corrina,Corrina, his take on Canadian Gordon Lightfoot's folk classic Early Morning Rain, the cooly raw Pretty Flamingo, and concert treasures What's Goin' On and Walk On Gilded Splinters. Wellr finds ways to possess these songs so they rise way above mere imitation. Both discs are set up chronolgically as they should be. If you're meeting him for the first time, you'll be enchanted, and longtime fans will find enough mouth-watering treats to keep them in the candy-store until the last song.

The time span covered here gives valuable and rare insight on how Weller picked himself up from the dip at the end of The Style Council days. Always an artist to exude supreme confidence, you can pick up little fragments of him feeling his way back in and then you get it full on. If you're new and interested in getting to know the artist; if you've followed him since TOTP appearance and that Heinz apron or, indeed, at any point through his immense career - this is indispensable. Re-Mastering excellent.
Oh, and the packaging is not bad either!

I was so glad to play this again and again.
There are great versions of Science and "Up in Suzee's room".
Also CD3 is all live, with an early 1990s acid jazz concert, featuring 7 great songs (including Style Council masterpieces "My ever changing moods," "A Man of Great Promise" and "Speak like a child", late Jam song "Pity Poor Alfie" , cover of "Just like Yesterday" and great version of "Work to do" as well as perhaps the best recording ever of Paul's greatest song "Kosmos."
That song alone sells it for me.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable collection, even if you're not a Weller fan.

Good mix of tracks , some versions I had not heard before. These BBC sessions are always woth buying , I think that one's opinion on this one will depend on liking the balance of tracks from his different phases -Style Council, Solo or covers. Well worth a listen but wheras I was expecting it to be great it is merely very good !

4 CDs just full of Weller magic. Something for every mood. The first two CDs are outakes from guest spots on radio shows, the third and fourth are from BBC concert out takes. I just love the way the recordings are faithful to the moment and bring home the joy of "performance". Paul Weller is a consumate performer, his best recordings are his live recordings. You get really close to him on these tracks. Wonderful.

This collection shows how truly great Weller is live. Some fantastic radio sessions show his true class. The digital edition is worth getting for the additional material.
