Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Christina Dodd brings you romance, intrigue, and passion in her most boldly sexual story yet! A WELL PLEASURED LADY is not for the timid... Prim, plain, desperately virtuous Lady Mary Fairchild stares at the seductive gentleman and wonders--does he remember the night they met? Surely not. In the ten years since, she left behind her youthful impetuousness and transformed herself into a housekeeper, disguising her beauty beneath a servant's dour clothing.

But Sebastian Durant, Viscount Whitfield, recognizes Mary as a Fairchild, one of his family's bitter enemies. When he demands her help recovering a stolen diary, she dares not refuse him. When he proposes they masquerade as a betrothed couple, loyalty forces her to agree. And when the restraint between them shatters and pleasure became an obsession, Mary has to trust a powerful man who could send her to the gallows...or love her through eternity.

"That letter was quite a shock," Lady Valery said.

"What letter?" Mary asked.

"The blackmail letter." Lady Valery dusted her fingers together as if the mere mention made them feel dirty.

"Does your housekeeper know anything about that?" Lord Whitfield showed his doubt with his nasty half smile and his skeptical tone.

"I have free access to everything here!" Mary wanted to convince him of her innocence in this matter, at least. "Why would I have stolen a diary when I could have had jewels?"

"The diary is worth more than the crown jewels," he said.

She took a long breath and with a courtesy born of desperation, said, "There is always a house party at Fairchild Manor."

"I haven't been invited," he said.

"Do you think I have?"

"Of course not. The Fairchilds don't know where you are." He observed her closely. "I wonder why."

Panic writhed in the pit of her stomach. She'd trained herself to listen when the occasional guests visited, and never had she heard the name of Guinevere Mary Fairchild mentioned as a fugitive from justice. But this man demanded that she revive Mary's vanished spirit, and with it, the specter of disgrace, imprisonment, and death. "I can be no help to you. When my father died, we begged my grandfather for help and he refused us. There's no reason for the family to welcome us now."

"Us?"

Funny. She was usually more discreet. "Hadden and me. My brother and me. As I said, the Fairchilds would not welcome me."

Clearly he realized her discomfort, but this was a man who liked to have the upper hand. He relaxed back into the upholstered Chippendale chair.

She comprehended his scheme. Thinking her uncowed by the threat of arrest, he threatened her with himself. Beneath the thin white linen of his shirt, she could see a thatch of dark hair over a well-muscled chest, and his shoulders resembled a prize-fighter's more than a nobleman's. His face...well, she'd seen executioners less austere.

Yes, he was threatening her. "I can't help you."

"But you must, my dear. Half of the town has been invited, including some very powerful men. I have no doubt the exchange of diary for money will occur during the party. I'll use you as a distraction while I search for the diary, and that distraction will be a pervasive one." He leaned forward, his eyes as gray and cold as the night fog she feared. "You see, you are going to be my betrothed."

Readers become writers, and Christina Dodd has always been a reader. She reads everything, but because she loves humor, she likes romance best. A woman wants things like world peace, a clean house, and a deep and meaningful relationship based on mutual understanding and love. A man wants things like a Craftsman router with attachments, undisputed control of the TV remote, and a red Corvette which will miraculously make his bald spot disappear. When Christina's first daughter was born, she told her husband she was going to quit work and write a book. It was a good time to start a new career, because how much trouble could one little infant be?

Ha! It took ten years, two children and three completed manuscripts before her first novel, CANDLE IN THE WINDOW, was published to great acclaim. In the years since, she has enjoyed writing witty, emotional novels for every reader: suspense, historical romances, paranormal romances, romantic suspense. Her stories have been translated into 25 languages, won the prestigious Golden Heart and RITA Awards and been called the year's best by Library Journal. Christina Dodd herself has been a clue in the Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle (11/18/05, # 13 Down: Romance Novelist named Christina.) Publishers Weekly praises her style that 'showcases Dodd's easy, addictive charm and steamy storytelling.' With more than fifteen million of her books in print, her legions of fans always know that when they pick up a Christina Dodd book, they know they've found a story "For the wild at heart!"

Christina Dodd is married to a man with all his hair and no Corvette, but many Craftsman tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Well-Pleasured Reader 18 Jun. 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book is a wonderful read. The heroine, Mary, spent years hiding as a housekeeper to Lady Vale'ry. Years ago she has shot dead a man who was trying to rape her brother. And now Lady Vale'ry's relative Sebastian Durant seeks her help to seek a diary stolen by her relatives. And Sebastian was the one witness to her shooting of the panderast years ago.
What makes this book a good read is the taut sexual tension between those two, so taut you can cut it with a knife. Sebastian is a complex man - hardened by years of poverty, ruthless in getting what he wants, he wants Mary. Mary spent years encasing her heart in ice, becoming an utterly practical but ultimately frigid woman. These two are totally wrong yet so right for each other. I admit I had to wince at some of Sebastian's antics, but then again, that was Sebastian. Ms Dodd couldn't write him - and I wouldn't want him to be - any different.
Clever dialogue, humour, and scorching sensuality. A volatile mix too good to be missed by any romance reader.

Ten years ago, Guinevere Mary Fairchild, daughter of Charles
Fairchild of the Sussex Fairchilds, killed a man. The only witness to
the incident is Sebastian Durant, Viscount Whitfield, who hates
the Fairchilds. Now, a decade later, Sebastian has found Mary posing as
a housekeeper to his godmother, Lady Valerie. He blackmails her into
helping him retrieve a diary that the Fairchilds apparently possess.
Though he is not sure what type of welcome she will receive from her
estranged family, she agrees to pose as his fiancee in exchange for his
silence.
..... The pair travels together, chaperoned by Lady Valerie, to Mary's
ancestral home, a place she was thrown out of ten years ago by her now
deceased grandfather. All the Fairchilds are filled with dark secrets,
going so far as to blackmail Mary, who realizes by now that she has
fallen in love with her "fiancee." However, chances of his
reciprocating her feelings are slim since he thinks all Fairchilds are
thieves and crooks and her current relatives do not do anything to
change his mind.
...... A WELL PLEASURED LADY is an extremely pleasurable late eighteenth
century Scottish romance that should thrill fans of the historical
romance sub-genre. The lead characters make a superb pair even if they
prefer it to be otherwise. The story line is crisp, loaded with
suspense, and brings historical Scotland to life. Christina Dodd is one
of the most dependable writers of historical romance and her current
tale is a grand slam home run.

Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is the last book by Christina Dodd that I will read unless I hear for a fact that she has improved her craft back to the excellence of intelligent & entertaining romance that I know she is capable of writing. A WELL PLEASURED LADY is a juvenile romance with a silly story, non-existant humor and shallow characterization. It appears that Ms Dodd's intent is to showcase a few titilating sexual scenes which are as empty as the rest of the book.

With the first chapter, your attention is locked in! A suitable amount of time is spent for the interest to build in the characters and the problems around them. The love scenes are imaginative and exciting! All of the characters are interesting and entertaining. I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read 3 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
A Well Pleasured Lady is a book I highly recommend to those readers who are mostly attracted by the hot scenes and less by the sweet romance. The plot is a little too unrealistic at some points, but overall the book is well worth reading.
