I have long put considerable store by Jon Gibby's more substantial book on assessing and backing handicappers, a field which many seasoned flat devotees shy away from. Here theory gives way to practice. The tables, initially a little confusing but valuable once mastered, are a useful addition to the arguments Gibby puts forward for his choices. Whether or not the reader is wholly committed to Gibby's methods, his substantial notes on individual horses - far removed from the usual Group 1 contenders that dominate most discussion - are well worth close attention. No system of selection can be accepted independently of conditions: draw, the going, number of runners etc. but intelligent use of the material here should prove profitable.

One Gripe.....that is why 4 stars. The tables at the beginning of the book are confusing. I checked the table for the horse Auction on the Racing Post web site which confirmed the SP ( I assume this refers to Speed not starting price) and the OR (Official Rating) had been reversed in the columns. This, however, is a small matter compared with the originality of the selection process being the best around for trying to predict how 3 year olds will run.......not an easy process as 3 year old handicap races are notoriously difficult to fathom. Anyone interested in handicapping horses should buy this book. It may give you an edge though bookmakers and serious punters will be aware of Jon Gibby's expertise and will adjust prices of his selections accordingly. If you are a layer or backer of horses you may well find value in some of the choices.

I'm a big fan of Jon Gibby and I believe his methods of picking out well handicap horses is fantastic. He always gives logical, coherent reasons for his selections.

Like a smart, good moving juvenile Ill give the book 4 stars!
