Synopsis

When Lenna Bickerton's book "Memories of a Cheshire Childhood" was published in 1996, her life changed. The book became the Leonie Press's best selling local title and wherever she went, Lenna would meet readers who thanked her for describing so vividly a world which has vanished for ever. Though devastated by widowhood, Lenna - now in her eighties - decided to write another book covering her life during the Depression and the early War years. A lover of music, literature and art, the bright and intelligent girl was unable to go to college for financial reasons. Instead she worked in a biscuit factory, briefly as a maid, behind the counter at Woolworths and in her parents' greengrocer's shop. When she was 14 she met her future husband, Jim, who spent years trying to get a job after being laid off by ICI. During their long courtship and after they were married, their pleasures were simple - walking, cycling, gathering lilac and wild flowers, appreciating the countryside and enjoying one another's company. This book is a hymn to their enduring love affair as well as a fascinating description of Cheshire in the 'thirties and 'forties.

Lenna died in November 1999 when she was writing the last chapter. The book has been completed by her daughter, June Hall.
