Product Description

Produced by Don Was, this is Elizabeth's fifth album and the follow up to the critically acclaimed Balls. Featuring guest appearances by Dwight Yoakkam, Rodney Crowell and Buddy Miller, Cook has produced a deeply personal set of songs where she sings of family grief and the harshness and delicacies of romantic and familial love.

BBC Review

The fifth album by Florida-born Nashville denizen Cook is apparently named after the profession pursued by her father – but she has done a pretty good job herself, here, of rendering disparate elements into something tough and just slightly sparkly. Cook's old-school country credentials are, after more than 300 Grand Ole Opry appearances, beyond argument; but the cast she has assembled around her is drawn from all points on the modern country spectrum, and beyond.

Don Was produces, Nashville alt-country mainstay (and Cook's husband) Tim Carroll plays guitar, backing vocals are provided by Buddy Miller, Rodney Crowell and Dwight Yoakam, and one member of her band possesses possibly the most incongruous CV ever boasted by a musician on a country record – Bones Hillman, previously better known as the bass player in Midnight Oil.

It's not surprising – and not at all bad–that the album created by the aforelisted collaborators is so riotously diverse. Cook pours herself into first-person confessionals skilfully reined in just short of oversharing mawkishness (Heroin Addict Sister, Mama's Funeral). She brings a commendably light touch to bear on the wry ballads and upbeat swingers which suggest the influence of former producer Crowell (I'm Beginning to Forget, I'll Never Know). She gently summons the ghost of Tammy Wynette on the domestic melodrama Girlfriend Tonight. And she's a latter-day Loretta Lynn on straightforwardly lubricious bar-room rattlers (Yes to Booty, Snake in the Bed).

Not all of the many feats attempted by Cook come off. The blustering boogie of Rock N Roll Man was doubtless great fun to play in the studio, but probably should have stayed there, and the half-rapped El Camino is closer to Shania Twain than is entirely comfortable. However, these are forgivable weaknesses in a generally robust collection by an increasingly intriguing and surprising artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets better and better! 19 Sep 2011

I have the previous albums by this lady and this one does not disappoint. Some traditional sounding country, some outlaw country all mixed together with fun and pathos. Simply one of the best artists out there at the moment and if you get the chance to see her perform live grab it.
I could name my favourite tracks but they are constantly changing.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding album 25 July 2010
Format:Audio CD
This is the first time I have bought an album by Elizabeth Cook; after hearing her sing "All the time" on Bob Harris' country spot on Radio 2, I was so impressed I bought the album. I usualy go for the more typical country, such as Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Gretchen Wilson and the like; however, this is a cracking country CD and if you don't have it, I highly recommend it. My favourite track is Rock and Roll man, which could have been written for a certain person I know! The beautifully haunting Mama's funeral and Heroin addict sister, will give you goose bumps. El camino and snake in the bed will make you smile, as will yes to booty; an all round great album and well worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welding A Masterpiece! 20 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD
It's been a long wait since Elizabeth's previous critically acclaimed album 'Balls' but it has surely been worth the wait.
Welder does exactly what it says on the title,Elizabeth has molded different pieces of Traditional Country,Alt Country,Americana,Bluegrass and some Rock n' Roll to produce an amazing album.
It starts off with the current single All The Time, which has an excellent edgy Bluegrass vibe to it,then there's the humorous El Camino, then she dips into something completely different with Not California,a big power ballad sounding song.
Other fantastic uptempos include the novalty song Yes To Booty, the rocking Rock N Roll Man and the ridiculously catchy Snake In The Bed.She also does a superb version of Blackland Farmer.
But Elizabeth also balances out the album with some slow heartfelt songs like the achingly personal Heroin Addict Sister, the touching Mama's Funeral,a song that her mother wrote I'm Beginning To Forget which has a 50's-60's country era style to it and the vulnerable Girlfriend Tonight.
There's also plently of guests contributing to these songs-Rodney Crowell,Buddy Miller and Dwight Yoakam to name a few.
Produced by the great Don Was,Elizabeth has out done herself with this gem making this, without a doubt, her best work yet!
If you're new to Elizabeth's music, think of a more mature, less commercial, edgy version of Miranda Lambert.

Prime Cuts: All The Time, Heroin Addict Sister, Yes To Booty, Blackland Farmer, Mama's Funeral.
