Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Welcome to the World of Marshall Jefferson collection is more of an historical anthology than a generic compilation, from the godfather of house and expert of the genre in its purest form. The first disc titled "House Music: the Beginning" is an exploratory selection of some classic tunes, rife with rolling pianos, electro basses and 909 hand-claps. Alison Limerick's "Where Love Lives" is the epitome of the vibe at the time with a strong melody and pulsating groove under her soulful vocal. Another great track is the progressive "Give it to Me" from Bam Bam which opens with a veritable symphony of electro stabs, wiggles and samples then breaks down to a squelchy wash of synth, drum and sparse vocal. Disc 2 "Marshall Jefferson: 2001" is a set of new anthems from the 21st century, still with a funky vibe by latter day standards but lacking in the nostalgic electro-crunch of the first disc. Bel Amour's self-titled track appears in its Rhythm Masters mix and bounds well into Jesse Saunders' "Body Music", a slice of funky progressive house onto which Jefferson throws some lines though sadly only as an introduction and not a live jam. Welcome to the World of Marshall Jefferson is a great overview of house music as it was then and as it is in 2001. And it does open up possibilities for a more comprehensive series or box set to follow, of which Jefferson would be the perfect curator. --Georgina Collins

Disk one is just crazy!! If you're one of those people that wished they were collecting music or clubbing when this stuff was made... this will jerk a few more tears! To get this collection of classics on a cd compilation is probably worth the money alone...

C'mon..Plastic Dreams, Move Your Body, I'll be You're Friend, Can U Feel It, Traxx U Lost and Adois' No way Back? I know how I would feel if I had all of this on vinyl - I suppose having them like this - mixed by one of the old veterans will have to do!! and how... ha ha ha..

Then Disk Two... well perhaps this is why this guy is considered a Godfather... Just check to see the footage of Marshall on the enhanced CD rom.. sweet! Although he may toot his own horn a bit - we can't deny as listeners and consumers the facts he gives us about his career and those who he has 'helped' reach their current place in dance music: Frankie Knuckles, Felix da Housecat, DJ Pierre etc. etc.. That is a nice touch buy these guys at WTTWO!

The tracks....This is a quality selection of current, quality house. Jazzy, soulful and at times quite deep and intelligent. It's all there really...and if you don't believe me, the selection of artists Jefferson uses is wonderfully diverse. Crossing from North America to the UK and Europe - and this is what really needs to be done today, if this new label is claiming to provide the future of cutting edge dance/house via Jefferson.

Paul Johnson's "I Ain't Got No Soul" will make anyone move; J Majik and Kathy Brown's "Love is not a Game" is a big crowd pleaser at the moment -god I love Kathy's voice!! The 15000 dollar remix of "Love me or Leave Me" by Delicious Inc./Sabrina Pope is quality, soulful, uplifting House. I can't get them all in this review but I can't finish without stating that I'm so glad Jefferson's (with Noosa Heads) "Mushrooms'" track is included. Marshall's approaching mix for his tale of "zooms" and "his" girl - is absolutely wonderful - what a trip!!

His mixing is class - don't know how or if they used a studio - and I suppose that may matter to some - But when I buy a compilation, I just want quality, smooth mixes... I'm not in a club, I'm with my mates "Have'n it" to disk two or chilling and reminiscing to disk one! Not only are the mixes smooth but I believe most if not all house fans, will appreciate the selection and order in which Jefferson delivers.

To Maybe help some of you reading this: I'm a big fan of John Acquaviva, Danny Tenaglia, DJ Heather, Mark Farina, Johnny Fiasco and Crico Castelli. If you appreciate any or all of the house provided by artists like these - you really should listen to this new collection....

From the Grandaddy of house, who alongside other greats such as Frankie Knuckles and Farley Jackmaster Funk was responsible for many of the warehouse party's in Chicago that gave rise to what we know as house music, comes this absolute stormer of an album. CD1 is a trip back in time through songs that helped shape house music to be the way it is today, classics such as Jaydee's "Plastic Dreams", Alison Limericks "Where Love Lives" and Mr Jefferson's very own 1986 classic "Move Your Body" would give someone who doesnt know much about the scene an idea of how it came about, to those who do have a clue it is a delight. CD2 is a fine example of what house music today is all about including many that songs in years to come will be considered house anthems, prime examples of this being the mega successful "Finally" by Kings of Tomorrow amd "Muzikizum" by X-press2. The final journey being one of house music of past and present to satisfy all.

I wasn't sure when I first listened to this album - it didnt hold much for me. Then after the second and third time through it just got deeper and better and now I love it. This is deep, soulful house that blows away the shallow 'house' you hear on these over marketed mix CD's often shoved down our throats. Highly recommended.
