Book Description

Dao Shi is not a bad man. Granted, he is a liar and a charlatan and a con-man, but aside from that he's not a bad man. He earns his living with mumbo-jumbo and magic tricks, convincing the gullible and superstitious that he is a master exorcist who can rid them of the demons and hungry ancestor-spirits that they blame for their bad luck, even though the closest Dao Shi has come to a ghost has been in his bad dreams after over-indulging at Mama Shen's.

One day though, Dao Shi runs into much more than he bargained for, and this sets in train events which result in him being caught up in the treacherous politics of empire and war, and a series of life and death battles with demons, bandits, traitors and lawyers, in cities and boats and the dark sewers of the Underworld. Usually a firm believer that the best form of defence is cowardice, Dao Shi becomes a reluctant hero as he learns that the death of his son and his fellow-soldiers of the Mountain Eagles may hide a terrible secret that is connected with the fate of the Empire itself.

Welcome To The Underworld brings together all four Dao Shi stories originally published in Black Gate magazine to much acclaim - one short story and three novellas/novelettes, totalling 40,000 words.

"You owe it to yourself to discover Rowan's fiction if you haven't already had the pleasure." (Jeff Vandermeer, two-time winner of the World Fantasy Award)

"Rowan is a superlative writer, skilfully blending humor, evocative image, and just the right touch of pathos to keep the tension humming." (Sherwood Smith, TangentOnline)

More About the Author

Hello, thanks for visiting.

I've written both novels and short stories, mostly crime fiction.

ONE OF US is my debut crime novel. It started as a short story published in Hitchcock's Magazine, became a novel, and ended up being shortlisted for the UK Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger award for best unpublished novel.

I've also had over thirty short stories published. Some of those stories have been reprinted in Year's Best anthologies, won a Derringer Award, been voted into readers' top ten of the year, or been in anthologies nominated for awards..

NOWHERE TO GO is a collection of eleven of my previously published crime stories, many of which appeared first in print in magazines like Hitchcock's and Ellery Queen's.

ICE AGE is a collection of eight stories of the strange and the chilling that have been published in various places over the last few years.

And last, but not least, SEA CHANGE is something different again: a young adult novel like those I loved as a child by writers like Alan Garner and Susan Cooper, about haunted, folklore-ridden England.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff 19 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Very well written short stories with a lovely central character and enthralling backstory developing. If you loved Bridge of Birds : A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was, there will scratch your itch for a China-that-never-was. (If you liked this book and haven't read Bridge of Birds yet, go and read Bridge of Birds.)

I enjoyed these hugely, will look out for the author again, and very much hope to see further adventures. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Here's hoping for a Volume 2. 29 Dec. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well this was a pleasure to read - four interconnected short stories/novellas about Dao Shi, a conman, fraudulent exorcist, and reluctant hero. The setting is an unamed imperial city, with the war in the mountains a constant background. These four stories do a great job in building up the detail of the world, and how Dao Shi's personal story might connect to its wider politics and machinations. There are moments of humour here, excitement (the descriptions of the various demons are particularly good), and moments of genuine sadness too. Throughout it all the author does a great job in writing from Dao Shi's point of view, and his character is what drives these stories - somewhat vain, lover of food, but always insightful and humorous.

The author says in his afterword that if enough readers enjoy these stories there may be more - here's hoping for a Volume 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please don't stop now! 26 Mar. 2012

I loved these stories. I read this in one sitting and desperately want the stories to continue. There is nothing I can add to the other reviews in terms of plot or praise I just want to add my voice to the calls for the stories to keep going. The author does say that if enough people ask he may well continue the stories so everyone please start pleading as they are beautiful little gems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 26 Dec. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Just finished reading this book and was in love with it, I could not put it down! I would have gladly paid for this book but the fact that it is free is a most welcome bonus. I just wish the story was continued so we can find out the whole truth of what happened in the mountains.
