Amazon Review

Prepare to be absolutely charmed by Jennifer Crusie's riotous tale of two slightly twisted sisters and a town chock-full of hunks, coots and petty politics in Welcome to Temptation.

Sophie and Amy Dempsey are just two wedding filmers trying to hop to the next level of their careers when they agree to produce a documentary of ageing film star Clea Whipple's return to her hometown of Temptation, Ohio. And when the local mayor, Phin Tucker, and the police chief, Wes Mazur, proffer themselves as willing subjects for quick flings, Sophie and Amy aren't the type to object. But things are never easy in rural Ohio, and what starts off as an esoteric art film project soon evolves into potential porn--and that's just the relationships, let alone the documentary. Clea's husband Zane turns belly-up, the race for mayor turns dirty and Sophie and Phin turn on the heat full steam.

With hot sex, clever characters and Crusie's trademark wit, Welcome to Temptation will keep your eyes glued to the page and your stomach aching with laughter. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I really liked this book - I think it is better by far than her last two books and worth the hardback price.
I loved the characters of the hero and heroine - I ended up fancying the Mayor myself and especially liked the devious Dempseys and the 5 rules to get people to do what you want.
I just wish now that we could have a sequel as I really liked all the nutty characters living in Temptation and would like to see how Sophie dealt with them when she became Mayor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written and fun 28 Jun 2002
By A Customer
A witty, entertaining romantic comedy filled with warm, memorable characters who are much more fun to read about than the usual whingeing thirty somethings thrust upon readers by UK 'chic-lit' authors.
The sex scenes absolutely sizzle off the page and expertly walk the thin line. Highly erotic, but never pornographic. Readers who have an aversion to the 'F' word might find the language a little strong on occasion as the aforementioned is used rather a lot. It didn't bother me too much. What did irritate me was the heroine's pulse which had an annoyingly repetitve habit of 'kicking up' every few pages. Seems to be a favourite phrase of the author's. However, that's really just nitpicking. I am sold on Jennifer Cruisie and will buy her other books. Usually modern romantic comedies leave me feeling bored and once I've read one, I have to abandon the genre for at least 6 months to recover. (last happened to me with Marian Keyes. I loved Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married, but when I came to the end, that was it for a long while!) With Cruisie, however, I'm thirsting for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny and romantic 29 Aug 2001

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is great, unputdownable - I read it in one day and then read it again the next. The characters are funny, the supporting characters not least so. Sophie and Phin are the right side of believable and their story is gutsy, romantic and sexy. I'll definitely be reading more books by Jennifer Crusie.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent & very witty 5 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Probably the best of all Jennifer Cruise's books. An attractive and witty central couple and amusing side characters.
Sophie Dempsey is the only 'normal' one in a family of likable and charming con artists. She is the 'mothering/nuturing' figure in the family, who really just wants to settle down in one place with a home and family. However, for the sake of her sister's hope of Hollywood, Sophie finds herself in Temptation, Ohio to make a come-back film for ageing former porn star Clea Whipple, who was born in Temptation and owns a farm there.
Enter Temptation's mayor, Phineas T Tucker, who's town council have just voted in an anti porn law and whose mother is trying to desperately marry him off to the too young Rachel Garvey of the "excellent legs".
Phin is the handsome, well-dressed epitany of every "glossy frat boy" who ever snubbed Sophie, and she's just the type of woman his father warned him about. So the scene is set for a witty battle of the sexes, plus one of the townsfolk is trying to bump Sophie off. Add Sophie's, con man brother, her controlling fiance, Phin's snobby, wealthy mother and his young daughter, Rachel Garvey and her parents and the sexy conniving Clea and her husband, plus a dead body and plenty of sex and you have an entertaining, amusing read. Enjoy!

I absolutely loved this book. It's really great quality chick-lit, fantastic characters, loads of tension in the plot, and a real page turner. I started reading it yesterday evening and stayed up half the night to finish it! The small town, gossipy atmosphere of Temptation is really vividly portrayed and there is plenty to enjoy besides the sizzling affair between Sophie and Phin. I defy any woman to read this and not fall a little in love with Phin - he's wonderful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book of the year so far 1 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Brilliant, funny and sexy. Cruisie's latest is worth every penny of it's hardback price. Great hero/heroine and good supporting cast plus intriguing quotes from movies. First time I've ever fancied the mayor in an American small town. I took the book in work to lend to a friend and kept taking it back to reread my favourite bits.

This is the second book of Jenny Crusie's that i have read, and loved it. Not knowingly.. I read 'Faking It' (both in the space of 2 days!.. Yes, they're that good!) before I read 'Welcome To Temptation', and realised there are a few characters in this one that are in 'Faking It'. If you read this book ( and you should)then you have to read 'Faking It' to conclude the stories of Davy (loved Davy!) and Clea. personally that was my favourite, but in very close competition! You should definately read this book if you like fun, sarcastic and sexy humour. You'll never put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars FUNNY AND SEXY 29 May 2004
This book is a wonderful read. It tells the story of freewheeling Sophie Dempsey, trying hard to live a respectable life, whilst looking out for her distinctly shady family. Coming to the town of Temptation to make a movie, she meets the town mayor, Phin, and from the start their dialogue is both sexy and very funny. Initially, it appears they are having a straight forward, if red hot, fling, but soon things start getting complicated as Sophie realises that her sister is making a porn movie rather than a love story, and relationships between the movie people and the townsfolk become increasingly explosive until a dead body is found abandoned. Sophie tries to play it cool with Phin but he is no fool. He tells her that despite her best efforts, he is well aware that her soul is a corkscrew, but he keeps coming back for more anyway. Soon both are aware that there is more than just sex between them. Even Phin's cute daughter, Dillie, is keen for them to stay together, and after a series of labarynth twists in the plot, they end up happy ever after. I loved this book-Jennifer Crusie is very funny and and expert and witty and sexy banter. There are a host of other interesting characters in the book too, notably Sophie's brother Davy, whose story is later told in his own book. If you like fast paced contemporary love stories filled with humour and passion, I recommend this one.
