Wilhelmine of Bayreuth said of Silvius Weiss that he, " excels so much in playing the lute that no one has ever matched him and that those who will come after him will only be left with the glory of imitating him." I, only recently, came across this wonderful Baroque, court lutenist-(a contemporary of J.S.Bach) through Sonata No 45 in A major on this recording. I am awestruck with the magnificence of this music. I thoroughly enjoy the dances here represented - the Courante, Bouree, Sarabande, Menuet etc. One of my favourite tracks is the lengthy Courante in Sonata No 45. I am particularly impressed with the stately Sarabande in each sonata. Even the comparatively early Sonata No 7 in C minor has a lot going for it. But for sheer exuberance of expression there is the final Presto of Sonata No 45 which seems to surpass every technical limit possible. Robert Barto's committed playing of the baroque lute is extremely attractive.
