4.0 out of 5 stars If You Love Books You Will Love This 7 Jun 2012
By Simon Savidge Reads TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
The premise of `Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops' is really what the title promises, a collection of snippets of conversations of, well, weird things customers say in bookshops. This collection is a mixture of what Jenn has either observed or conversations she has been part of working for `The Edinburgh Bookshop' and `Ripping Yarns Bookshop' as well as a selection of conversations other booksellers from bookshops worldwide have been privy to. It starts as it means to go on...

Customer: I read a book in the sixties. I don't remember the author, or the title. But it was green, and it made me laugh. Do you know which one I mean?

Through the collection it is not only the weird things that customers say that will have you laughing it is also the things that they actually do. People who want to leave their children in the shop while they browse other shops, let children destroy books and think nothing of it, ask for cups of tea when they aren't shopping there. They often come in clearly thinking a book seller has no real job, they can be rude, demanding and I haven't even started on some of the weird requests that they have when they do want to buy a book.

Customer: Do you have any books signed by Margaret Atwood?
Bookseller: We have many Margaret Atwood books, but I'm afraid we don't have any signed by Margaret Atwood, no.
Customer: I'm looking for a birthday present for my wife. I know she'd really love a signed copy. You couldn't fake a signature could you?

Now I have to add a slight worry/niggle/thought I had whilst I was reading. There are occasions where a customer said something and I laughed because I have pondered such things in the past too, a favourite was `Did Charles Dickens ever write anything fun?', that to me makes perfect sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny and so true 5 April 2012
By I Readalot TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
We have all heard the one that goes 'can't remember the author or title but it has a blue cover, do you know the book I mean?' But as this book shows even more weird things are said by customers in bookshops and as someone on the receiving end I know only too well just how weird and frankly bizarre they can be. There are times when I have been rendered virtually speechless and with other customers looking at me, equally puzzled and trying not to laugh. If you are looking for something really funny to brighten your day then you can't do better than this compilation, flip through at random and there will be something to make you laugh, sigh or groan (maybe all 3 at once). A perfect book for anyone who has ever worked in a bookshop, you will recognise these comments/questions only too well and like me may pick up a few pointers from these booksellers replies! For everyone else it will probably make you stop and think 'Have I ever said anything like that?' At the very least it will give customers an indication of what their poor humble bookseller has to contend with! How would you reply to someone who asked if Anne Frank ever wrote a sequel?

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 6 April 2012
Format:Hardcover
This book is the perfect present for book-loving friends - it's very funny, jaw-droppingly so - who on earth are these people who expect bookshops to sell ... , and expect booksellers to be prepared to...., well, you'll just have to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 27 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been following Jen Campbell's blog for a good few months now, so when I heard there was going to be turned into a book I got really excited, as I've always been a fan of these types of things.

If you're in need of a quick laugh, something to make you chuckle during a quick break or a quiet afternoon, then I highly recommend this book. It's also a perfect example of why I don't, and never will, work in retail, because there's no way I could hold my sarcasm back as masterfully as the Bookseller within repeatedly manages to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weird indeed! 28 Mar 2013
By Nicola
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Read it as soon as it arrived in the post, absolutely hilarious! I think I was laughing for a good ten minutes at the quotes about the famous five books! The ripping yarns section was by far the funniest, but I was giggling the whole way through!
The only criticism I had was that sometimes it wasn't clearly marked when a quote ended, a bit confusing at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny Quick Read 13 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a short very funny collection of overheard things bookshop customers have said. This is a easy read, I would describe it as a pick-up-put-down book that is perfect to read on public transport, although do be warned people may look at you weird if you just start laughing out loud. There are also some very cute illustrations to go along with the anecdotes, as well as making me want to visit the bookshops these anecdotes are from.

Basically I would recommend this book to any budding bibliophile, or as a gift to any bookworm in your life, although I will say as a book lover some of these instances will make you cringe/despair for the non bookish people in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should come with a health/embarrassment warning 22 Jan 2013
By D. Brown VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This is a book that should come with several warnings, including making strange "Nooooo!" exclamations in public, not being able to breathe for laughing and regularly wanting to smack yourself upside your head with the book to see if you really are still in the world you thought you lived in or if you've slipped into another dimension, where people are fundamentally lacking in common sense.

This is a hilarious book but I suspect a little less funny if you were on the receiving end of some of these comments. Such as the man who got berated by an old lady for refusing to leave the shop and buy a stamp for her! Or the shop owner who had to try and find a book from a vague `It has a green cover' style of description.

I would have loved this book to be longer and I suspect there are many more stories that could be included. Paving the way for book two? Perhaps. Certainly this book - and presumably subsequent volumes - would make a fantastic gift. Just don't forget to share the above warnings...

A good laugh. I can't believe some people say these things. Makes me feel very smart or just worried at how many stupid people are.
