3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Stuart Sillitoe on 26 Feb. 2013
Format: Audio CD
The name Felix Weingartner (1863-1942) will forever be associated with conducting; indeed, he was the first conductor to make commercial recordings of all nine Beethoven symphonies. However, thanks to CPO mining the archive of unsung composers we have an opportunity to sample some very fine and unjustly neglected music! This is the ninth recording of Weingartner's music CPO have made, and whilst I have only heard the chamber music, they show a style indebted to the 19th century romantic composers such as Brahms and Schumann, with even a tinge of late Beethoven, and his teacher Liszt.
The quartets presented here, No. 2 in f minor and No. 4 in D Major; clearly identify Weingartner as a more than competent composer. They may be a little old fashioned in their outlook, and it is probably this which is the reason for their neglect, but they are elegant and well crafted tuneful works, works that have and will bring me a great deal of listening pleasure!
This disc completes the recorded cycle of Weingartner's five quartets and such has been my enjoyment that it leaves me with the wish that he had composed more! Oh well I will just have to turn my attention to his orchestral music, of which there are five discs so far encompassing the first five of his seven symphonies, I am sure that I will find equal enjoyment there as I have in his quartets.
