This is a brilliant musical by Kurt Weill with the always outstanding poetic lyrics of Langeston Hughes. Weill was on is A game when working with the theater and Hughes is in my opinion one of the most influential and brilliant poets of the 20th century. Together they make an incredible team. This work is overlooked for the most part and should be performed much more often that it is. Street Scene cuts right through to the heart of the street life. Very highly recommended if you are a fan of great musicals and fantastic poetry. Five star rating. See my other reviews if you wish.

Outstanding recording of a forgotten gem! 3 Mar. 2006
By CD Maniac - Published on Amazon.com

An extremely well-done and moving recording of Kurt Weill's "Street Scene", and the only complete, un-cut score recording. Wonderful singers are a highlight (including a great cameo by Arleen Auger), and the story that takes place in a New York tenement shows how well Weill absorbed American life. Conductor John Mauceri can also be heard as the speaking character, "Office Murphy".

Great recording of a great musical 1 Sept. 2009
By E. Fisch - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a great recording of a great musical. I have seen two stage productions (one by the New York City opera) and in both instances I was profoundly moved. This recording brings about the same feeling. Josephine Barstow is heart breaking as the hopeless and tragic Mrs. Murrant. Everyone else has a true theatrical feel to put this engrossing, dramatic show across as wholly realistic. Decca's sound is outstanding. This is one show that should be performed more often.
