three 1920's Berlin influenced String Quartets by Weill, Schulhoff + Hindemith:

this cd at present price is a bargain for ever curious quartet lovers + features three arrestinng works from the trio of composers based in 1920's Berlin - namely Kurt Weill, Erwin Schulhoff + Paul Hindemith.

straight off i have to say i've had this cd for a few months + the Weill quartet is a for me a masterpiece, that as a huge fan of Benjamin Britten's string quartets is a real eye opener as Britten must surely have heard Weill's Quartet before starting composing his own works. the similarities are striking : chromatic, sparse, elegaic + modern without a note wasted in very persuasive neo-classical yet modernist forms. quite excellent from both composers - yes the similarites are that strong. uncanny.

my next favourite work is the Schulhoff. a much more folk themes based rhythmically vibrant work with Bartok-ian textures + use of gyspy as well as jazz elements in a heady mixture of styles all within the same work. vibrant yet sophisitcated at the same time. Schulhoff was known as a bit of stylistic as well as cultural maverick on the Berlin scene, but who perished in a nazi concentration camp at the age of 47 - a tragic waste of a major talent.

so, the final + least favourite work on this nimbus cd, is the spare, austere + (for me) emotionally uninvolving quartet no.3 by Paul Hindemith. his work continues to skirt aroud the edges of popular taste even now some 90 years later + perhaps for good reason. the work here is pretty demanding - full of astringent dark writing that will take many listens for its "charms" to unfold. this quartet strikes me as a cross between Berg + a bit like Bartok's late quartets. perhaps Hindemith's wider popularity will come eventually.
