Product Description

Product Description
This was the final recording in John McGlinn's wonderful series of music theatre shows for EMI Classics and he lavishes on it the same devotion that characterised his earlier ones. Kurt Weill's Broadway musicals are better represented on disc now than at any time previously, nevertheless this collection takes us to many of them that have remained untapped. The centrepiece, The Firebrand of Florence, was an unmitigated disaster at its 1945 premiere, but with Thomas Hampson as a suave Benvenute Cellini and skilfully chosen excerpts that present the story from start to finish, this recording makes the best possible case for a work that might take its place in the Weill canon in the same way as Candide has in that of Bernstein. Love Life with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner was another ambitious show with an unusual story that reflected on a marriage in three successive centuries. Musically it doesn't quite measure up to the promise of its theme. The composer's characteristic melodic touch is sure enough, though, in the earlier "Westwind" from One Touch of Venus and "It Never Was You", usually presented as a ballad but composed as a trio for Knickerbocker Holiday. With Weill's own orchestrations played in idiomatic style by the London Sinfonietta, and a memorable supporting cast, this is a collection to treasure. -- Adrian Edwards

4.0 out of 5 stars Unknown but brilliant Weill music, 18 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This is an excellent CD for those who know Kurt Weill quite well already. Although I am quite a fan of Weill's music, I didn't know most of the songs on this CD before. The songs are all from his American phase, and you can hear it - you hardly recognize the former German composer. The songs are performed by a cast of very good singers plus a full symphony orchestra, so you can enjoy the excelent orchestrations by Weill himself. My personal favourites are the 4 songs from "Love Life", a musical from 1948. It was a succes in those days with 252 performances, but it is unfortunately more or less forgotten by now -WHICH I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND. On this CD, you can listen to two romantic ballads and to two narative songs which are a kind of "5-Minute-Operas". Do not miss this CD if you like Kurt Weill!
