A genuinely compelling love story,

I only found this book by chance and I'm so glad I did! It's the kind of love story you just get wrapped up in. Totally compelling.
The book is set in the 1920s and starts in Egypt around the excavation of Tutankhamen's tomb, but the story mainly takes place in London. The characters come from a wide sweep of society, and the novel really makes that time come alive. The part I most enjoyed was the love story between Esther, an art student, and Frank, a doctor who has been mentally scarred by WW1. It reminded me a little of Atonement, and also Kate Morton's House At Riverton. I haven't given it the full five stars because sometimes the plot strands switched too quickly when you wanted to linger on one particular story. But it stays with you long after you've finished reading it.

An absorbing and intelligent read,

I was really captivated by this novel - chiefly because Thynne is masterful at re-creating historical atmosphere, and has clearly done a great deal of research. But - and this is key - it's never overdone, as one sometimes finds in historical fiction. The story itself - of plundering and appropriation, of cultural colonialism and fashion, conditional love and financial greed, is gripping and evocative, and flits neatly between Egypt and London.
Thynne's historical imagination slightly recalls Gosford Park and Downton Abbey, with deftly interwoven strands highlighting the vagaries and nuances of the stifling class structure. The love stories - all very different - are all absorbing and overall there are lots of sharp apercus. The dialogue is light and clever: so much so that the novel established a real momentum. It was hard to put it down. So much so that I reached the end in two sittings. The Weighing of the Heart (this title refers to an Egyptian belief concerning the soul) is one of those books that opens a door to a world you might never have considered(especially if like me you have never been to Egypt) but quickly become engrossed in. My only cavil was a plot twist at the end which made me re-think the central character, Samuel Dux, in a way I'd have preferred not to. It was real and plausible but it meant that there was too much bitter, for me, in the Bitterswet.

A wonderful read,

I loved this book, which combines fiction with some obviously researched fact. I shall definitely read some others by the same author as I really enjoyed her style of writing.
