Widely credited with being the band who kicked off (and merged) the two sub-genres of punk-pop and geek rock, The Green Album is Weezer's attempt to wrestle back their crown from the upstart likes of Blink 182 and Wheatus. The Green Album, recorded nearly five years after their previous album, the widely ignored (but wholly excellent) Pinkerton, sees the band reunited with former Cars frontman Rik Ocasek, who produced their multi-platinum debut way back in 1994. The result is an album of catchy pop gems, more accessible than Pinkerton, and with a quicker pace and more sonic depth than Weezer. Though the high-pitched harmonies of former bassist Matt Sharp are missed (he left to focus on his own band, the Rentals), lead singer/songwriter Rivers Cuomo still has a way with an infectious hook and a sing-along chorus, especially on "Don't Let Go", "Photograph" and "Knockdown Drag Out". The album's first single, "Hash Pipe", kicks off with a bass-heavy, 70s-sounding metal riff, while "Island in the Sun" is as summery as its title suggests. At just over 30-minutes long, The Green Album may leave some listeners feeling a little cheated, but overall, this is a gem of an album, small yet perfectly formed. It is also a worthy return for a band whose influence is undeniable, if under appreciated. --Robert Burrow

'The Green Album'had been compared to Weezer's first effort 'The Blue Album', and in the sense of its tight production, measured guitar riffs and formulaeic approach to poprock, this is true. It's also fair to say that it's nothing like the free-spirited, angst-ridden passion that made Pinkerton so infectious and intimate. This new album, however, does not feel like it will be the only album from weezer in the near future- it gives the impression of a set of songs that say 'We're back, enjoy this one for the summer, before we turn it up to 11 and rock your emotions to their limit.' evidence from recent gigs suggests that weezer are flowing with new material, and if it's anything as good as what's on this latest album, I'm a happy man. In short- positive, tight, a bit different, but incredibly refreshing.

YES! The fabulous weezer are back and is their new album good, erm....let me think about it, YES! It's great, more like Pinkerton than the blue self-titled album, but it's good and just as lively. Don't let go, the first track, blasts with guitar after the drum intro and it's got a kinda tune you just HAVE TO bob your head to. I have to say that some of the songs from this album are like the beach boys meet the get up kids, It's GREAT! Hash pipe has it's essence of evil about it and the high pitch singing sustains and the vocals are demonstrated well. Distorted guitars, rocky drum beats, squealing, high pitched, smooth and beautiful vocals,(from all the band) and thick bass make this band as good as they ever were and even though they split for a while, they're back in style and they haven't lost a spec of their talent.

I realized a couple of months ago why Weezer's my favourite band: there isn't a single of their songs I don't love! And this new album (their third, after "The Blue Album" and Pinkerton) is no exception.

Don't Let Go is a typical Weezer song with 'ooh wow wow's, nice vocal harmonics and a simple but effective rythmic section: the perfect lead in.

Photograph has handclaps and 'oh baby's and is really cool.

Hash Pipe, with its pseudo-heavy-metal riffs, is the first single and man, it rocks!

Island in the Sun is a really catchy ballad, with 'hip hip's that just can't get out of your head... 'hip hip'.

Then come Crab, Knock Down Drag Out, Smile, Simple Pages and Glorious Day, which are other typical Weezer songs with good guitars and funny backing vocals... the usual stuff.

And last but not least: O Girlfriend is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It's so full of emotions it brings tears to my eyes. I could listen to it over and over again.

To sum up, "The Green Album" proves that even after five years, Weezer still knows how to write beautiful, powerful and catchy rock tunes! The only flaw I could spot would be its length since it only lasts 30 minutes.

Let's hope a lot of singles come out, as the recorded B-sides I heard (I Do, Starlight, O Lisa and Teenage Victory Song) are great as well, especially Starlight with its really nice tune! Sad it didn't "make it" to the album.
