Biz Markie has always been a strange artist in that his stuff shouldnt work, but inexplicably does. It works very much.

At first listen to this album, it can be quite jarring It starts off with an amusing little country-guitar freestyle, just to prove that Biz is as mad as ever (and that he still can't sing).

Then, the first track 'Tear Sh*t Up' is as old-school as they get. Jazzy Jeff provides the scratch, and an old-fashioned minimalist break beat backs up Biz's party rhymes. Its good, but not great, and makes one wonder if the man has moved with the times at all.

Track two 'Chinese Food' is similarly basic, but the rhymes are quite funny. Yup, he talks about food.

So far, things are ok, but not great, but when track 3 'Let me see you bounce' kicks in, things take a dramatic turn for the better. It's remeniscent of some of Busta Rhyme's quirky ragga/dancehall tinged beats, and deseerves to be a hit.

From this point on, the album goes from strength to strength. It has a strong old-school flavour, with Biz's main concern being party rhymes, boasting and bragging, and wanting to entertain more than inform. His lyrics have a singalong (rappalong?) quality that much hip-hop lacks these days. It does however, seem that Biz is yearning for the old days. 'Throw Back' , and 'Turn Back the Hands of Time' both recall the the old days, with the former being a more cheerful tune, but the latter adding a poignan twist to the theme. The beats throughout are updates of old school stylings, and the piano breaks that pop up occasionally are typically Biz.

One of the standouts that definitely warrants a mention is 'For The DJs', its a heavy beat, and is similar in tone to Joe BUdden's 'Pump it Up'. Only better.
You like guest appearances? How about Jazzy Jeff, P Diddy, Lil' Kal, Elephant Man, Erick Sermon, and Faison? That should keep you happy.

Sadly, there were problems with sample clearance which mean some of the tracks have been reworked from their original form as played in promo copies (Imagine how much they must be worth in coming years). You have to question if this record may have originally been slightly better, and the last track 'Im Not Perfect' isnt even on the album, as announced by a card inside this UK release CD).

Go buy this one, it's a real grower, but one has to wonder how the younger listeners infamiliar with 80's hip hop will recieve it.

Nobody beats the BIZ! 11 Feb 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Listen up youngstahs! Before all this commercial, artificial, redundant nonsense that society calls "hip hop" these days, there was the BIZ! I was skeptical when I heard the biz was back. But the buzz was out and I bought the album. I couldn't be more pleased. Biz still hits us hard with his original style and flavor. Took me back to the days of Eric B. and Rakim, Slick Rick, Boogie Down Productions.. this list can go on for days! There may just be hope for the future of hip hop. Biz, you most definetly give me hope. Peace!

Biz is definitely back!!! 18 Dec 2003

Let's be honest..you heard biz markie had a new album coming out and you said "so what, Biz is old"...but just buy the album and check it out...i actually listened to almost every joint...I love "friends"..."chinese food" is aight...the single with elephant man is one of the lower points..."throw back" is a perfect Biz song, with the beat and lyrics sounding like typical Biz throughout the years...that's my personal favorite..."turn back the hands of time" is in the same vain, but not as strong as "throw back"...Just buy the album...you'll be glad you did...you might actually learn something about where hip-hop came from, instead of the joke that it is today...i use any cash money or lil' john song to prove my point...expand your musical tastes...i'm out
