It is the perfect companion for rainy weekend afternoons. In selecting these puzzles, Hubert Phillips aimed to 'provide maximum entertainment' and they are sure to test even the most astute of 21st-century minds (there is a complete set of solutions for those who find some of the problems a little too taxing).

4.0 out of 5 stars Brainteasers from the 1930s 15 May 2011
This is a reprint of a book that appeared around 1930, authored by the famous "Caliban" (Hubert Phillips). Production values are excellent. The content is fascinating -- including logic puzzles, chess and bridge problems and crosswords. I found many of the logic puzzles to be exceedingly difficult, requiring detailed knowldege of probability theory and advanced maths to solve. The style of cryptic crossword is very different to today's and should serve as a real challenge to those who enjoy such things...
