This gem of a show from US cable should be high on your 'must see' list. If it's not, is it because it's (ostensibly) about an all-American mom surviving her bereavement by selling pot, perchance? Tish and pish!
Mary Louise Parker (surely one of the sexiest women on the planet... oh, and also one of the best actors on US TV) gives a superb performance, elevating already brilliantly written scripts to a level of black comedy rarely seen on British TV. Each half hour episode runs the gamut from phone sex with a deaf girl, through setting up a fake bakery (a 'fakery' if you will) to shooting marauding mountain lions in the face. Oh, and you'll laugh too.
To complement this, Elizabeth Pekins's performance as the sexually-frustrated, bitchy, PTA president mom-from-hell almost steals the show.
Bring on series 2 right now.

I bought Weeds not knowing anything about it other than the basic premise - suburban wife and mother takes to weed dealing after husband dies. I wasn't that impressed by the pilot episode but stuck with it and have been pleasantly surprised. The characters are allowed to develop nicely and although I wouldn't say that there are many out and out bits of hilarity it is gently comedic. It is quite dark in places and the only downside I can say is that occasionally some of the dialogue feels like it is deliberately trying to be crass or shocking. Overall though I would recommend it for anyone who likes comedy dramas.

I had never heard of "Weeds" and just took a chance that i might enjoy it.
The best way to sum up my view of this show is that after 3 episodes i bought series 2,3,&4.
Having now seen 1,2,&3 i can say that this show is actually addictive.
As other reviews describe the premise of "Weeds" i will simply state that this show is both funny and dramatic.
There are some really black moments that will either surprise or even possibly shock you. The change fom a typical all
American Mom to butt kicking Drug dealer is well written and believable. I am licking my lips in anticipation at series 4 & hope Weeds will coninue.
This is a diamond of a show. Buy it.

Her husband dies of a heart attack while jogging and Nancy is left as a stay-at-home mom with two sons, a huge house, leased car, and no income. The solution to this conundrum: Nancy becomes the drug dealer of choice for inhabitants of lovely, suburban Agrestic.

The stroll down a tight rope high in the circus tent has only just begun for Nancy as she tries to balance an business (selling weed and a bakery/fakery), her family (sexually active teenage son and 11-year-old son grieving out loud plus slagger brother-in-law), and of course her lively neighbours including Chairman of the PTA, a very creative accountant, and her supplier.

Oh yes!! "Weeds" is hilarious!!! Be prepared to laugh and cry when you watch the series.

Louise.

Great cast especially Mary-Louise parker but as her character and the show got darker towards the end of the series and seemed to go for unbelievable events and shock value alone i lost heart along with most of the cast!, shame and no series two for me.

The basic premise, widowed suburban housewife turns pot dealer to make ends, may not sound like comedy gold, but in the hands of these particular writers - and given licence to satirise cross all sorts of normal TV boundaries it succeeds in spades.
Drugs, teenage sex, infidelity, blackmail and straightforward parenting all get explored with a combination of dry wit and near Deadwood levels of fruity language.
Significantly the series also looks at the risks and costs associated with these behaviours. It may portray pot-smoking as a fairly harmless vice in itself but doesn't shirk from the cost of its association with the organised(and shambolic) crime that goes with it.

All told this is a real grower of a series and one watching it soon becomes something of habit.
