About the Author

Federico Garcia Lorca was born in 1898, in Andalusia, Spain. A poet and dramatist, and also a gifted painter and pianist, his early popular ballads earned him the title of 'poet of the gypsies'. In 1930 he turned his attention to theatre, visiting remote villages and playing classic and new works for peasant audiences. In 1936, shortly after the outbreak of Civil War, he was murdered by Nationalist partisans. His body was never found. Gwynne Edwards is a specialist in Spanish theatre and cinema, until recently Professor of Spanish at the University of Aberystwyth. His books include: Lorca: The Theatre Beneath the Sand; Lorca: Living in the Theatre; Dramatists in Perspective: Spanish Theatre in the Twentieth Century; The Discreet Art of Luis Bunuel: and Almodovar: Labyrinths of Passion. He has also translated and adapted more than forty plays from Spanish, French and Italian, many of which have been staged at major theatres in Britain and the United States. He has published three collections of Lorca plays with Methuen Drama, together with student editions of Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda Alba, and also collections of seventeenth-century Spanish and contemporary Spanish-American plays adapted from the correspondence and prose writings of Dylan Thomas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fiery translation of Lorca's 'Blood Wedding' 22 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
'Blood Wedding' is undisputably one of the greatest plays of the last century. Unlike many post-modern pieces written during this period, Lorca uses beautiful, eloquent language which is a delight to read and flows of the tongue of anyone lucky enough to perform it. It is wonderful, then, to discover a translation which manages to retain Lorca's poetry. The play is about the unfortunate fate of a young woman who elopes with her lover on her wedding day, leaving her fiance at the altar. It is a delicate and yet passionate play, based on a true story. David Johnston's sensitive translation is fully in touch with the original text, and overcomes language barriers smoothly and efficiently. Furthermore, the text includes an extensive introduction and notes section. These will prove an incredibly useful guide to anyone studying the text in schools or universities or performing the play and will provide stimulating background reading for those who enjoy the play merely as a form of entertainment. This a scorching translation and a must for Lorca enthusiasts-or simply those who wish to be entertained.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blood wedding script 1 Jan 2013

I bought this as a help when I was studying the original play, as I hadn't been doing Spanish for very long at university. The background information was useful to set the scene, but I found the translation was not particularly accurate for what I wanted. Useful to get the general gist of the play though

I was disappointed with this book as I was with the play. It is not nearly as powerful as I had expected but it is interesting.
