Book Description

5 Jun 2008
Sarah is a wedding planner hiding a rather inconvenient truth - she doesn't believe in love. Or not for herself, anyway. But as the confetti flutters away on the June breeze of yet another successful wedding she somehow finds herself agreeing to organise two more, on the same day and only two months away. And whilst her celebrity bride is all sweetness and light, her own sister soon starts driving her mad with her high expectations but very limited budget. Luckily Sara has two tried and tested friends on hand to help her. Elsa, an accomplished dress designer who likes to keep a very low profile, and Bron, a multi-talented hairdresser who lives with her unreconstructed boyfriend and who'd like to go solo in more ways than one. They may be very good at their work but romance doesn't feature very highly in any of their lives. As the big day draws near all three women find that patience is definitely a virtue in the marriage game. And as all their working hours are spent preparing for the wedding of the year plus one they certainly haven't got any time to even think about love . or have they?

5.0 out of 5 stars Light 'n breezy 19 Jun 2008
WEDDING SEASON IS THE perfect summer read, or perfect read for anytime of the year. I rank this right up there with THIS CHARMING MAN and THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES. This is story of Sarah, Bron, and Elsa who seem to have the knack of pulling off the perfect weddings and organizing everything . . . but their own lives. The contrast between their Swiss-watch perfection in making other's dreams come true, and the funny events that ruin and run their own lives is refreshing and somehow real-life-like. The dialogue is great and the characters are three dimensional. What was the one thing I didn't like about WEDDING SEASON? I couldn't put it down.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wedding planning for dummies! 17 Mar 2010
I've been a great fan of Katie fforde: her dry humour, everyday women in situations not unlike those of my own or my friends, and they've given a light, relaxing read. Unfortunately, this one doesn't work for me. There is far too much detail about how wedding planning companies work and I have the impression that in her desperation to meet a publishers' deadline Katie fforde just put down loads of the research she'd done for the book. There's almost none of the humour which made her books special. Maybe I've just read too many but it was all so predictable.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK, but don't rush to buy it. 7 Mar 2010
I was quite disappointed by this book. I couldn't warm to the main character at all, the storyline is very predictable, and everything is just to "convenient" to be believable. I got through it quite quickly and it was an easy, lighthearted read, but I've read better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rushed, disappointing and badly edited 15 Jun 2009
Oh dear, the pressure that this author is under to deliver a novel a year is showing. This is not a very good novel. It's rushed, no character is sufficiently deeply drawn, and it lacks humour. It's also really badly edited; there are repetitions and typos and lots of other inconsistencies. Katie would do better to write less and revert to the charm and humour of her earlier novels.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sad reader 13 July 2008
I have been a fan of Katie Fford's from her earliest works 'The Rose Revived' and 'Stately Pursuits', but this one, like the last couple of her's, have made me decide I will not read any more. This one was trite, boring and so horribly predicatable - right from the beginning I knew what was going to happen to all 3 women - and the only reason I kept going was to prove myself right! It gave every indication of having been written to a formula by a once funny and clever writer who obviously feels she no longer needs to make an effort - her name alone will sell it. The dialogue was stilted and unbelieveable, the characters left me completely unmoved. Thank goodness for the library I say! At least I didn't buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another brilliant book from Katie Fforde 3 Jun 2008
A wonderful story of 3 women who become friends because they all spend time making other people's wedding day perfect. The story revolves around Sarah, the wedding organiser, who doesn't want to believe in love. This has all the usual Katie Fforde wit and sense of humour, with 3 gorgeous heroes to fall in love with. So easy to lose yourself in the story - left me smiling all day.

I read a book of Fforde's a long while ago - believe the title was Highland Fling - and found it impossibly twee and very unrealistic. However, I'm usually prepared to give an author another go when they've written so many books in the hope that they've improved somewhat, so, when I saw this book cheap in a bookstore, I snapped it up.

The thing is, there was nothing massively wrong with this book. The writing was pleasant and flowed effortlessly to the inevitable conclusion where everyone hooked up with everyone else in a suitably romantic fashion; the characters were, on the whole, pleasant individuals who you felt deserved happiness; and the plot, although very slight, was enough to keep the book romping along. Competent enough really.

And yet all those factors were not enough to garner this book an additional star to bring it to an average rating (the home, I feel, of most chick lit endeavours). I think this is because everything was too neatly closed off. For instance, there was one protagonist - name of Bron (hmm, that wasn't a good sign - I've literally just finished the book and had to check up her name) - who seemed to be going it alone quite happily after the sudden end of her relationship (which was handily signposted to us about a chapter before it actually happened). She moved into a nice little cottage and was setting up a freelance hairdressing business - but apparently needed a man to complete the picture. It's almost as though Fforde is terrified of leaving a book finished without ensuring that all her women are paired off and safely in a relationship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Feel good chick lit 19 April 2011
Katie Fforde is one of those authors that I return to time and again, knowing exactly what to expect from her books and using them like a comfort blanket. I read a wide variety of fiction and read loads of books by new authors, however, when I'm feeling down or stressed out I reach for an 'old faithful' that I know is going to make me feel good, Katie Fforde is one of those authors to me. I've got a huge TBR pile but I fancied something a bit more easy going, a book I could relax into and I noticed Wedding Season on my book shelf. I'd bought this a couple of months ago, simply because it was called Wedding Season and I'm busy planning my wedding for later this year.

What I've come to expect from Fforde's books are characters you can relate to; they feel like friends very quickly and remind you of your real life friends in the way that they're portrayed. The pretty girl who's oblivious to her looks and hides in black all day because it's easy, the down-trodden girlfriend who really needs to stand up for herself, this is where I got stuck as I'm not sure that people like Sarah actually exist, are there really people out there that have been so hurt in the past that they won't start a fresh realtionship with a man? More importantly, if there are people that are so cynical about relationships, would they really be a wedding planner? I know this is a novel and there has to be the conflict or it would be a pretty boring book but I couldn't relate to Sarah and that irked me. The rest of the characters I could relate to with no problems, I could imagine being in their situations, mI could imagine talking to them as a friend and sat in my house on my own at night, I didn't feel like I was alone.
