Product Description

Product Description

'Wed 21' by the bewitching Juana Molina, sees all the various threads she's previously explored masterfully woven together with new elements. She creates a mischievous, playful, joyous series of songs, brimming with surprises. Molina has previously released four albums on Domino Records.

Juana Molina has been acclaimed as a deeply original and visionary artist who, "like Brian Wilson or Kevin Shields, pulls off the most out-there material with melodies nearly as accessible as conventional pop" (Rolling Stone). She has variously been described as "pure genius" (Les Inrockuptibles, France), "beguiling" (Pitchfork), and is said to be "one of the most extraordinary singers around" (Sunday Times), who is "creating a slippery soundtrack for the subconscious" (Spin, US) and "subtle, unclassifiable sonic magic" (Uncut).

On her previous albums, Juana Molina deliberately used a defined, minimal array of elements (mostly guitar and layers of vocals, with some synth and percussion) to compose pieces which have gradually moved from folky acoustic songs to mesmerizing, "gorgeous reveries… [and] radiant clouds of sound" (the NY Times, about her previous album 'Un Dia').

This time, she's remarkably expanded her palette of instruments, incorporating electric guitars, bass, drums and inventive electronics, thus giving 'Wed 21' a richer, broader sonic spectrum. In some of the tracks, Juana comes as close to a pop song format and to a full band sound as she ever did...while some other pieces are sinuous excursions through gamuts of feelings and textures. As the album unfolds, each of the eleven songs reveals new, delightful ideas, unexpected turns and inspired atmospheres.

Review

"Sensuous poptronica...With Wed 21, she's moved on to more colourful worlds, with buzzing electronics swarming around psychedelic rhythms, each song flooded with gentle melody" - (8/10) -- Uncut, (Jon Dale), November 2013

"Hypnotic with fluid electronic elements and the occasional welcome interjection of bluesy guitar and jagged off-beat percussion" (4*) -- The Independent On Sunday, (Howard Male), October 20, 2013

"This might just be her best work yet"

"Suggestive of progressive, rock, freeform jazz and traditional Latin music, its deep bass, melodious rhythm guitars and captivating vocals (sung in Spanish), is an exhilarating electronic ride masterfully produced. A gorgeously glossy, sweet and spicy treat." -- Clash

"the most satisfying realization of her Latin-tinged folktronica style" - (5*)

--" i " (Andy Gill)

Format: Audio CD
Argentinian singer/sonwriter Juana Molina has over her last several
albums moved increasingly away from her acoustic folk-oriented roots
into the exploration of integrating technology with her muse. This
development seems to me to have been at once both successful and shrewd.

Her new recording 'Wed 21' is a collection of twelve inventions which
demonstrate her tenacity and creativity in an absorbing mix of tricksy
Latin rhythms, sinuous melodies and cleverly-crafted vocal harmonies.
Ms Molina's voice, whilst not being the most powerful of instruments,
has a sensuous breathy charm which more than makes up for its limitations.

Opening track 'Eras' is a cracker; a laid-back staccato composition full
of beguiling beats and nicely off-kilter synth decorations. 'Sin Guia, No'
combines a simple bluesy tune with deliriously spooky shape-shifting vocal
cadences to fine effect and 'Ay, No Se Ofendan' gradually builds from its
hesitant, brooding introduction to an exhilarating climax of riotous tribal
percussion and multi-tracked vocals exploding like fireworks in a night sky.

There's more than a little magic at work here.

I'm happy to have fallen under Ms Molina's spell!

I discovered Juana Molina 2 years ago and have embraced all her albums in that time, the progression to Un Dia was fascinating even going backwards as I did through her albums but that title track always remained my favourite all through the discovery process. Now finally comes the next progression forwards and although I have only just bought the album and played it through twice, all the hypnotic ever-changing rhythms and orchestration take me to a better place yet again.
So far it is in my head as a whole but will change and grow with more listens as does all her work. It echoes and reflects on all her other albums but buzzes (literally on Lo Decidi Yo) with originality and a powerful female sensibility.
During 40 years of getting excited about new music not many artists can stimulate this palate so fully.
Thank you Juana.

This is the very best work by the wonderful Ms Molina - her earlier albums, such as 'Son' are interesting and worth checking out, but this latest makes them sound like preparation for this, the main event. Wed 21 retains some of the weird-folk melodies but marries them to playful, original and real groovy electronics to create some modern psych exotica. Parts remind me of Broadcast, Laika, Autechre and Bjork without ever sounding like any of them. You could even compare to Tropicalia legend Caetano Veloso's later albums with Arto Lindsay, but it's less likely to deter existing fans. Even though I only discovered this in January, it's high on my list of the best of 2013.

This is a lady who deserves to be better known. Great album combining Juana Molina's voice with tight rhythms and electronics. Good stuff.
