I have been an avid follower of Webroot security software for 3-4 years now, after I used this software to remove a particularly nasty virus that my old PC had. Over the years, Webroot have improved their software year after year, building on its effectiveness and its capabilities each time.
Webroot Internet Security Complete 2011 is a further enhancement of their previous 2010 Internet Security package, this time increasing their "free" built in on-line backup/recovery storage to 10Gb, and also adding Password Security functionality.
As an internet security package, this software is good. It certainly does what it says it does, without being a resource hungry beast, such as MacAfee and Norton. It is well thought out and easy to use, but still allowing a fair degree of customisation. The main components are:
* anti-virus, standard virus scanning and protection, including a firewall
* on-line file sync./sharing - specify files and folders to backup and/or share to your online account
* system cleaner - tidies up all those temporary and internet files
* identity/privacy - including components for anti-spam, anti-phishing, secure browsing and an on-line password vault.
All of this is fairly standard in many internet security packages these days, and it does work well, so why only 3 stars? My 2 main gripes were the installation and start-up issues. I think if you are new to Webroot then the first one will not apply, but I had to uninstall my previous version first and therefore lose all my customisations. In addition to this, I had to create a new Webroot account, which meant that all of my previously backed up files not only needed me to be identified again, but also upload them again. As for the start-up issues, I had no issues installing Webroot, but it is quite noticeable now that some of my drivers produce errors when I log into the PC, asking me to reinstall them.
A third area for caution is that the on-line password management and on-line backup facility, once your subscription expires, will no longer be accessible. I suppose this makes sense, as you are only paying for a 1 year licence, but something to be mindful of if you are not intending to renew.
As for someone who has been so very pleased with Webroot software over the past few years (I have written several very positive reviews before now, for Amazon), this package has left me somewhat deflated, so, sorry Webroot, only an average product and a bit too buggy for me.

The whole approach of Webroot Internet Security Complete 2011 is too keep it simple without compromising the level of protection. Consequently the GUI has a refreshing stripped-down look that's divided into 4 sections - PC Security, Sync & Sharing, System Cleaner, and Identity & Privacy. A simple colour coding of green, yellow and red is used to denote the security status of your machine. So if your machine is clean the GUI appears green with a reassuring "You are protected" notice. If Webroot recommends a scan then the GUI turns yellow with a "You need to complete a scan" message. And if there's a potential threat then it turns red, displaying "Your computer is vulnerable".
Identity protection is first rate with this product. There is a password generator that will create random passwords and securely store them so you don't have to remember them on forms. All your personal data can be encrypted in a database that is then used to automatically fill out web forms, saving a huge amount of time as well as enhancing security. Passwords can also be imported from other password managers, though Webroot lacks the ability to import from IE.
Webroot also comes with the standard free online backup but, unlike other suites, it provides 10Gb of storage, which is very generous and far more than its competitors. File synchronisation is also very well catered for with the Sync & Sharing feature. This allows important files to be easily synchronised across multiple Webroot installations by simply dropping the files into the Magic Briefcase folder. Additionally, files can be shared with others by emailing them the link to the file, allowing them to download the file that would otherwise be too big to email as an attachment, very handy.
Running a complete system scan was quite slow but this only needs to be done once as all subsequent scans only check for new or changed files. The scan can also be customised but the configuration options on offer aren't as extensive as with other security suites and the options are quite basic.
Secure browsing is fully supported, Webroot installs an extra toolbar for this within the browser. If you try and access a known dangerous site it will divert you to a red warning page, with the warning being yellow if the site is just suspicious. Searches in Google, etc. are also annotated with security ratings, though no real explanation is given as to why a certain site is deemed unsafe.
On the negative side, the antispam filter, though solid, will only work with Microsoft Outlook, which is rather limiting. Also the system cleaner only erases the browsing history of IE and Firefox. Webroot also comes with no parental controls.
Generally though Webroot Internet Security Complete 2011 is an impressive product. It's very straightforward and easy to use, offers a complete set of protection features, and includes some very versatile online backup and file synchronisation tools.

Very good product for the money, especially if you have mutliple machines at home (say a base unit and a laptop) - runs very well in the background and doesn't slow the machine down at all (base unit runs XP and lappy runs 7 - both work fine). Very comprehensive suite, covers all bases.
Ideal if you have a low spec mechine as even when running a full scan it just runs in the background without slowing the machine down (had AVG / NOD / Avast in the past and all of them slowed machines to an unusable pace - webroot, you don't even know its running a scan until its finished and tells you!).
Only niggle was a week after I installed and registerd it I got an email from Webroot telling me their server had been hacked and my email address stolen! (doesn't sound good I have to say).
They have now switched to a more secure server so that shouldn't be an issue for anyone else considering buying this.
