Product Description

Product Description

Despite a long history of involvement in the design and production of firearms, the Birmingham firm of Webley & Scott is probably better known to the general public for its manufacture of airguns than for any other product. Until now, there has been no published reference that concentrates exclusively on the history and development of Webley air pistols. This book has been prepared to offer a comprehensive guide for all those interested in the subject and who appreciate the traditional British craftsmanship entailed. It embraces all models based upon the same initial patent, which were produced between the years 1924 and 1999, commencing with the original Mark 1 and progressing through twelve other models to the final Webley Tempest introduced more than half a century later. In addition to the pistols themselves, there are sections of the book relating to pellet styles and various shooting accessories produced by the same company. The whole work is divided into 22 sections, the text being accompanied throughout with 226 original photographs and over 70 line illustrations, each of which has been prepared by the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide, 9 Jun 2008

This review is from: Webley Air Pistols: Their History and Development (Hardcover)
If, as a boy you owned an air pistol, there is a good chance that it was either a Diana or a Webley. Whereas the Diana was regarded by many as the poor relation and little more than a "pop" gun, the Webley Junior and Senior were much sought after, firstly because of the fine engineering that went into making the pistols and secondly they looked so much better than the Diana and other contemporaries.

This book tells the enthusiast everything they could wish to know about the history of the Birmingham firm of Webley & Scott, a firm that to many is only known for its manufacture of Airguns. Of course those with a more intimate knowledge of the company know that it also manufactured conventional firearms for a long period.

This book covers all the Airguns manufactured by the company and produced between the years 1924 to 1999 and there have been many of them. The book covers not only the airguns themselves but also sections relating to the various pellet styles and their suitability, plus the various shooting accessories that the company produced. Selecting the right style and weight of pellet for an air weapon, be it a pistol or rifle is paramount in getting the best from the gun. There are a large number of original photographs in the book and lots of illustrations. The book, for me at least was a real journey down memory lane to the time when the innovative lines of the Webley Junior and it's then unique way of loading were unique. There have been many more sophisticated pistols developed over the years by other companies but the Webley holds a special place in airgun history.

5.0 out of 5 stars The reference for Webley air pistols, 14 Nov 2008

This review is from: Webley Air Pistols: Their History and Development (Hardcover)
This is not an inexpensive book but any serious Webley collector interested in the history of English innovation and manufactoring should have it. It is a large format book with heavy, low acid, sized and calendered pages. It is a book that I intend to pass on to my children and I suspect they will pass it on to theirs. It has many photographs of the various models, series, versions and variations produced during the long history of airgun manufacture. It also has parts lists with Webley part numbers, exploded drawings and cutaway drawings that show where the parts go and how they function.
Additionally the history of manufacturing with the cost cutting pressures ever present over the years that lead to substitution of cheaper cast and powder forged parts over machined ones. The original pistols which sold for 40 shillings would today have to sell for five hundred pounds or more. The factory workers of the time must have earned pitiful wages.
