I am very impressed with the performance of this chimney, which got a full load of charcoal briquettes to white heat in around 20 minutes, using only some newspaper to start the process. A full load in this chimney neatly fills a pair of Weber Charcoal holders (Weber Charcoal briquette fuel holders (pair)) -very convenient. Do take care (as other reviews mention) as sparks do fly a little on emptying. Wearing protective mitts is just common sense with all that heat so close.

This takes all the doubt out of starting up a BBQ and makes an uncertain process a predictable one. This really helps the timing of your cooking -you can now know exactly when you will be able to start cooking.

Highly recommended

UPDATE JULY 2012

I've now had the opportunity to use this with a variety of charcoal types. First of all your charcoal must be well stored and not at all damp. I used some old charcoal from my shed -total disaster. Likewise, use the briquettes and not lumpwood -it just doesn't work properly.

Dry, fresh briquettes -no problem!

Still very pleased with this gadget overall.

UPDATE MARCH 2015
Three years on and this works as it did the first time I used it. Lovely bit of kit that is lasting well. Looks a bit tarnished, but it's not rusting at all -which you'd expect anyway from aluminium. The plastic handle has not cracked or gone brittle. Very happy with this.

This is an excellent product. It has banished lighter fluid and firelighters from my barbeque repertoire. No longer do we have to eat burgers that taste of chemicals.

The chimney lights the coals by holding a small amount of newspaper underneath which you light. It takes a little getting used to so that you don't overstuff the newspaper at the bottom - which causes the ash produced to put out the flames. But once you have the knack it works really well. Because of the extra efficiency of a chimney, your barbeque is ready faster and all the coals are properly hot.

As an added bonus for the pyro's - you get to pour the hot coals out of the chimney onto the barbeque rack. But the double-handle system means you can do this easily and without getting burnt.

A marvellous product.

After stuggling for some time trying to light the BBQ the traditional way, fire lighters, starting gel, placing the coals in the right positiion, I stumbled across this and after reading the reviews decided to buy. Wow, how easy is this to get the BBQ going.

Simply place some rolled up newspaper in the bottom part of the chimney, fill the top with the charcoal bricks and then light the paper at the bottom (remembering to keep it on a flat surface).

Produces quite a lot of smoke to start with as the coals catch, but then it brings them up to white hot is relatively short time.

If anything, the coals are way too hot to cook with at first, but once you're poured them into the BBQ go have a glass of wine or 2 and wait for the coals to cool a little before cooking.

I bought this product 5 days ago, and was actually fairly sceptical despite 19 5-star awards. I've used it twice, and it has performed as described. I have used a single firelighter beneath the 2 sheets of newspaper, and on both occasions, the charcoal has been ready in 20 minutes. I don't know if this is the reason that the charcoal has got to the cooking temperature, or whether it's the type of charcoal, but I have nothing but praise for it.

This is a great product that will pay for itself in no time as it only requires old newspaper to light as opposed to the regular lighting gels etc. The coals are evenly lit and reach the "white ash" stage quicker.

I dont usually bother to write reviews but this worked so brilliantly I thought I would. I was dubious of the claims of this product when I bought it but I was wrong.
I rolled up two pieces of newspaper and curled them in rings in the bottom section. Drizzled a bit of veg oil over the paper then filled th top with charcoal. Lit the bottom and waited. It only took 20 minutes until it was white hot and ready to go. Pouring the contents out was a bit hairy, but all in all a brilliant product. Would recommend 100%. Will quickly pay for itself as you dont need firelighters.

This is a brilliantly designed bit of kit. Worked like magic on the first time. Not so good if you like to spend hours poking coals, drinking beers saying, "Ready in a couple of hours, love". You'll have to do other jobs while this does the burning for you.

A very useful piece of kit if you want to take your BBQ-ing beyond just grilling burgers and sausages, especially for slow cooks that can last for hours (or even days!). You can very quickly and effectively light a huge quantity of coals to start or replenish your BBQ using just a few wads of crumpled newspaper or a couple of parafin cubes. All you need to do is stack the charcoal inside the chimney (on top of the internal grill). Light the paper / parafin cube on a fire safe surface and pop the chimney on top of the lit paper / parafin cube (there is a chamber under the internal grill for this).

The chimney is a good size and easily fills my BBQ up (for reference, I have a Weber 47cm kettle). I believe this chimney is supposed to be big enough to fill up the larger 57cm Weber kettle as well.

I am giving this 4 stars because it is works perfectly for what is designed for and meets all my requirements. The only thing that marks it down is the price which is a little high (£26), but expected for Weber brand products. As with most things, you get what you pay for and in this case you get an excellent charcoal chimney.

DO NOT DO THIS ON STONE PAVING. Most materials used for paving gardens are not heat proof and will crack with the significant heat coming from the chimney. I just so happen to have a spare cheap little BBQ that I now use as the lighting station for replenishing coals, but you could set something similar up with heat proof bricks and a simple metal tray.
