The growth of websphere over the years has lead to an accretion of deitrius around the administration objects that have accumulated as the product has continued its relentless attempt to eat the world.

This book clearly explains these objects, how to use them and gives sample jython scripts that provide a useful toolkit. As an additional bonus the scripts are available from the download page of the Book's entry at IBM press.

The book also provides a reasonably complete, if some what dense, beginner's guide to Jython.

Whilst the book is not a 'fun' read it is an invaluable guide and asa professional - or at least full time - WebSphere Admin I find this an essential addition to my working library.

Awesome resource! 22 Jan 2010
By David K. Coburn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was introduced to this book during a Jython class taught by Keven McGrath. He kept referring to the book in the classroom, and bringing up sample pages for examples. I was favorably impressed during the class, and even more so when the book finally arrived. They take a very important subset of Jython code for WebSphere and give concrete examples of how to configure and administer WebSphere through scripting.

This is not only an awsome resource for Jython programming, but having a fundamental knowledge of the contents has improved my understanding of many aspects of IBM WebSphere itself. Things that are not terribly clear in other books become very clear when working through the examples and reading explainations for why things work the way they do.

I would strongly recommend this for anybody who administers WebSphere, not just adminstrators trying to maintain it through scripting. My only complaint is that they've not announced a followup yet to cover some of the stuff they were forced due to time and space constraints to leave out. Given the nature of WebSphere, to cover everything in one book would be impossible.

Great resource for WebSphere Administrators 18 Jan 2010
By David Brauneis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I recently had the opportunity to review the recently published WebSphere Application Server Administration Using Jython from IBM Press and thought I would share my opinions on this book. In the spirit of full disclosure, I was provided a copy of the book to review at no cost to myself.

After spending a considerable amount of time teaching myself Jython and learning to administer WebSphere Application Server using it, I wish I had a copy of this book when I first started writing Jython scripts for WebSphere Application Server administration. The authors do a great job of both introducing the reader to the Jython language as well as introducing the reader to the WebSphere Application Server administrative objects.

The WebSphere Application Server Administration Using Jython book is brilliantly structured, first the Jython language followed by WebSphere Application Server administration. The book is also full of practical examples.

An excellent resource for both novice and experienced WebSphere Application Server administrator, this book has earned itself a spot on my bookshelf and in my list of my recommended books for folks interested in automating their WebSphere Application Server administration.

Great book for beginners or experienced scripters 12 Jan 2010
By Bob O'Hanlon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
For a number of years now, my job has required me to write wsadmin scripts in Jython for both testing the WebSphere Application Server (WAS) product and for customers WAS deployments. I have recently taken copy of this book - I wish I had something like this when I started out. Not only is it a vital resource for those embarking on a scripting project it is an excellent reference book for the more experienced scripter. I particularly like the way the book is structured by introducing the Jython language and then introducing wsadmin and the Admin Objects. I will be recommending this book to all my customers who wish to embark on scripting their implementations.
