Product Description

Review

"It is clear from the outset that Bates has alot of experience in teaching web courses and he uses it to great effect in the book as a whole."
(LTSN–ICS Book Review, 18 September 2001) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Web programming is about more than creating and formatting webpages and websites, though that is often a starting point for many. Using scripting languages such as JavaScript, Perl and PH, it becomes possible to add a lot more functionality to a site.

This book teaches the essentials of working with the most important web technologies. From client development using HTML and Javascript, through to full server side applications written in ASP and Perl, the complete web system is shown. Concentrating on immediately useful code rather than theory, this is a how–to book for practical and project based courses. The broad scope covered by this book begins by creating reasonably simple webpages with HTML, then working through related document and content tagging systems such as dynamic HTML and eventually XML.

I have read this book in the course of researching my final-year project at University. I was recommended it by my Project Tutor (one Chris Bates, funnily enough!!) and I have found it to be balanced, well-written and very informative. I have tended to use it to give me an overview of an area, then delved into the rather arcane O'Reilly books to get to the nasty technical stuff. Having been lectured by the author, I feel that he has leveraged all his teaching expertise and experience to produce a superb book which I recommend to anyone starting out in web design.

I have found some sections in this book a real help and others not so helpful. Html, javascript, perl, cgi are well covered as the author goes into good detail with lots of examples but i was a little disappointed with some of the other areas of the book in particular the php section where he mostly justs shows the difference between php and perl the languages are similar but i think php should have been covered in more detail as it is growing and growing in use. This book will help you to get building websites using html, javascript and provides a solid platform using perl for cgi programming but is not the complete interent programming book and to the authors credit he does acknowledge this. So for some of the more advanced subject areas jsp,asp this book wont be the most useful resource to use.

Decent enough book, nice to get it so cheap too on the Amazon Marketplace.
Using it as a reference for my MSc Computer Science programming modules.
