The introduction of this book is really quite witty and I guess it reminds you that the writers of such books are not complete geeks after all and that they are human.

I used this book for my final year dissertation at university and I feel that it's thanx to this book I obtained a good degree. :)

If anyone reading this is thinking of doing a university project related to search engines i recommend this one as a good source for information gathering.

This book contains an overview of the main search engines and it provides an indepth insight of each one. It is an excellent book for those getting to know search engines and also for those who don't have a clue but wish to develop one for their site anyway. Search engines are the key need for businesses today and this book shows you how to customise and use search engines that tailor your needs.

The search enginge the authors said they would continue to build as an open source project is not available. E-mail to authors bounces. Publisher won't help find authors or the code to the project in the book. The general search engine info is ok, but the coding project is a rip-off.

This book has some fun background on Web Searching, though it doesn't give enough credit to the years of research in Information Retrieval.

If you have any of the site search products covered in this book -- AltaVista Intranet, Excite for Web Servers, Harvest, ht://Dig, Phantom or Ultraseek, the book provides excellent and detailed instructions.
