Product Description

A quick and easy introduction to key XML technologies. Extensible markup language, or XML, consists of tags indicating the content of the data contained on a page. The neutral, platform-independent format of this mark-up language makes it possible to feed different output channels (Web, WAP, Print) from one information source. In this quick and easy introduction to key XML technologies, Web Design with XML adds another dimension to XML, demonstrating how to generate visual output using XML DTDs, Namespaces, CSS, XSL, and XSLT, all illustrated with examples. One basic example file is used throughout the book to demonstrate features of CSS XPath XSLT and FO All examples are available for download from the accompanying Web site and can easily be used for server-side web page generation as well as for client-side rendering Contains easy-to-use techniques requiring no programming know-how Can be used as a concise and readable XSLT reference

From the Back Cover

Web Design with XML is a quick and practical introduction to key XML technologies for the busy web designer. Featuring easy to use techniques and clear examples, Manfred Knobloch and Matthias Kopp show how to remodel XML documents into useful and attractive webpages. The book provides introductions to XML DTDs, Namespaces, CSS, XSL and XSLT with examples that illustrate how the concepts can be used. All examples are available for download on the accompanying website and can easily be used for server-side webpage generation as well as client-side rendering.

The appeal of XML lies in its capacity for content management. When using it in web design the task of the technology should be to implement requirements as closely as possible. By using Web Design with XML you can ensure that your webpages are as efficient, manageable and user-friendly as possible.

This is not a book for total new-comers to XML; readers should already have an outline idea of how XML works before buying it. However, if you already have the basic idea of XML and now want to publish XML content as HTML then this could be the book for you. XML is a complex topic, but this book covers most aspects in just over 220 pages. The topics are covered clearly using a well thought out example which runs through the book.

I had one disappointment which may put off for some potential buyers. The back cover claims that "All the examples are available for download on the accompanying web site and can easily be be used for server-side web page generation as well as client-side rendering". Not so! The web-site is in German language, so this reviewer struggled to find the examples. When you do find them, they are also in German. I emailed the publishers asking where I could obtain the English examples that are used in the book, but I received no reply.

The original German edition is evident in some sections of the book where the English translation is rather odd. I can imagine that the German edition would have rated 5 stars, but this edition gets only 3 stars.
