This book has very little solid content for such a large volume. My high expectations were rapidly replaced with disappointment at the lack of concise information it contained. Only after the first 300 pages did the general conversational tone and common sense advice (often painfully obvious) become replaced by instructions on actually creating a website. This book would probably be most appropriate for younger readers who had not thought very hard about why they wanted to create a website or what they wanted it to do. A reference book would however be an essential accompaniment.

I feel this book largely lives up to its title of 'the complete guide'. It covers most aspects of web design very well. Perhaps one could mention two weaknesses: firstly the occasional misuse of grammar and the abundance of typographical errors (can't you tell I'm a copy editor!); and secondly the incomplete coverage of publicising a site through search engines and other methods (an issue of great importance these days as the web continues to grow at such a phenomenal rate). Obviously in a field so large as this there is some overlap with other books one may have read, but I would say on the whole this one is an excellent place to start.

I bought this book because it was so well reviewed by other readers, and have to say I was disappointed. There was little there that wasn't fairly obvious, and while it contained examples of good design, nothing pushed the envelope. I would say it's really written for graphic designers with little or no experience of web coding, whereas what I was looking for was a book that concentrated on graphic design, for people with experience of building web sites. Far too much space was taken up with full code listings of example sites - a good way of turning a 150 page book into one with 900 odd pages, and charging more for it.
