I can't believe this was the recommended text for the weather section of my Yacht Master theory course. On first glance it looks good, it gives the impression that it's a real beginner's guide that explains the basics clearly with colour diagrams etc. But, it's so dreadfully written. I was so frustrated with the style and learnt nothing from it.

I'm not the only one - on finding it on a friend's yacht I asked him what he thought ... "awful, no help whatsoever" he concurred.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Avoid! 10 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This book almost seems to set out to complicate and confuse. It is far from user friendly. It was on the reading list for my RYA coastal skipper/yachtmaster courses, but no one had a good word for it. The other publications were far clearer and written to a much better standard.

The book looks OK on a quick flick through: there are numerous colour diagrams and photographs. However, instead of placing the corresponding text directly alongside the pictures, they are frequently several pages apart. Technical terms are used from the beginning, but the explanation may not appear until chapters later, and with no cross reference. There's no Glossary to help, and the Index is so thin it is potluck you can find what you are looking for: for instance there's no entry for "forecasting", "map", "rain", "sleet", "shower" or "temperature".

Explanations in the text are complicated time and again by the inclusion of unrelated material or unnecessary jargon. After two paragraphs on Coriolis, the third begins "You don't have to understand Coriolis..." The author may have understood his train of thought, but it is certainly not clear for anyone picking up the subject from scratch. There are no end of Chapter key point summaries or "What you need to know" boxes.

If you find this book on a course reading list, you can do yourself a favour by looking for something else. Avoid this one!

In this widely used coursebook, the author has condensed what the aspiring Yachtmaster needs to know about weather into a slim volume packed with colour diagrams. But it takes effort to master the material because the mechanisms causing the weather are complex.

I recommend the book to anyone wanting to gain a yachting qualification.
