Book Description

8 July 1999 Oz Blackstone Mystery
Newly married to his childhood sweetheart and happily settled in Glasgow, private enquiry agent Oz Blackstone is looking for a touch of the unexpected in his life. And when he's introduced to the seven-foot, granite-muscled figure of Everett Davis, champion wrestler and head of the burgeoning Global Wrestling Alliance, he knows he's found it. The GWA's televised tour of Europe has been dogged by inexplicable technical hitches and terrifying accidents in the ring - leaving Everett convinced that someone is trying to sabotage his business before it can take on the big boys and go global. Under the inspired disguise of Master of Ceremonies, Oz enters the extraordinary world of professional wrestling to try and unmask the perpetrator. But as he begins to discover the dangerous reality behind the glittering facade, a string of accidents becomes murder, and suddenly Oz has to wrestle with the biggest crisis of his life.

Quintin Jardine continues his second series of novels, the first features police chief Bob Skinner this second series features private investigator Oz Blackstone, Wearing Purple being the third in line.

As in the preceding works, Blackstone's Pursuits (written under the pseudonym Matthew Reid) and A Coffin For Two, the scene shifts between Edinburgh and mainland Europe as the travelling band of professional wrestlers make their appearances and disappearances.

Anyone who has stumbled across the American WWF and WCW coverage on television will be familiar with the scenes drawn around the wrestling settings - they may seem somewhat contrived but then that surely reflects the circus of American wrestling. The misfortunes they encounter could so easily be part of any unscrupulous manager's publicity repertoire.

While the wrestlers are being picked off, Blackstone's menage-a-trois, seemingly resolved at the conclusion of A Coffin For Two, is resumed and continues to a final, shocking conclusion. The tone dips, not unsurprisingly, at this point however the wrestling plot is resolved neatly but still leaves the reader in a state of anticipation for the next instalment.
