Product Description

Review

Hall has long been recognized as a leading authority on early modern military technology. Scholars of the period and historians in general will find this the best treatment to date of the impact of gunpowder on Western Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

(History: Reviews of New Books )

Combines a good grasp of military history with an understanding of the history of technology... Hall manages to integrate his technical discussion into a refreshing reinterpretation of general military history in the period, and his book is an engrossing read.

(American Historical Review )

The best book yet on military history in the era from the Hundred Years' War to the Thirty Years' War.

(Frederic J. Baumgartner, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University )

Hall's unmatched command of the sources and the science of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century military technology makes this book a must-read for any scholar interested in the subject.

(Clifford J. Rogers, United States Military Academy )

A truly great book! 5 Nov 2003
Format:Paperback
I rate this book as one of truly enlightening books I've read on the subject of Renaissance military history in general and early gunpowder warfare in particular. Not only is it very good on hard-to-come-by facts about (early) gunpowder artillery, it also covers the general evolution of Renaissance warfare splendidly. It traces the origin of guns, gunpowder and the tactics of missile weapon fighting through the entire period with a clear-sightedness that is worthy of historians such as Fernand Braudel and John Keegan. As another reviewer pointed out, the book hardly mentions naval warfare and artillery, but I see this as a limitation in scope only. On naval warfare in this era there are books of at least the same caliber, e.g. "Gunpowder and Galleys: Changing Technology and Mediterranean Warfare at Sea in the 16th Century" by J.F. Guilmartin or "The Safeguard of the Sea (I)" by N.A.M. Rodger.

More than miltary buffs should read this book. Hall intertwines facets of technology and society to clarify how each can affect the other. Gunpowder did not sweep away the Middle Ages; the thought of the Middle Ages and Renaissance molded how and why gunpowder would be used. Hall makes the point that a new techology such as gunpowder does not dominate progress but is rather only an ingredient in a very complicated mix of elements.

This book presents a serious, unbiased and well documented view on gunpowder-technology origins and evolution and its real significance in medieval and Renaissance land warfare. However, only the projectile weapons have a good coverage, and warfare (and use of gunpowder) at sea is almost totally forgotten! If its title reflected its contents this book would get SIX stars from me.
