Product Description

Product Description
Wealth Management Planning addresses the major UK tax issues affecting wealth management planning for both the UK domiciled and non–UK domiciled individual. It explains, with numerous worked practical examples, the principles underpinning the three main taxes: income tax; capital gains tax; and inheritance tax. It is aimed at those involved in providing advice in the field of wealth management planning including solicitors, accountants, financial planners, private bankers, trustees, students of tax and law and the layman seeking in depth knowledge.

The recent Finance Acts 2006 and 2008, in particular, have modified significantly the tax rules in key areas applicable to wealth management planning. These new tax rules are all addressed in detail in this book and include the pre and post Finance Act 2006 inheritance tax treatment of trusts; the new post Finance Act 2008 residence rules; and the new Finance Act 2008 rules applicable to non–domiciled individuals and the tax treatment of off shore trusts.

In view of the increasingly international nature of wealth management planning the book attempts to place the UK tax rules in an international context addressing such issues as: the role of wills in the international arena; the implications of the EU; the suitability of off shore financial centres; and the role and use of double taxation agreements.

Appendices bring together useful material produced by HMRC and a detailed bibliography for the interested reader is also included.

“ This book gives comprehensive coverage to the complicated subject of taxation for Financial Planners. It will be very valuable to all those Financial Planners who wish to extend their learning and reference and desire to meet the needs of clients”.
NICK CANN, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE INSTITUTE OF FINANCIAL PLANNING.

“ In this book, Malcolm Finney presents a comprehensive summary of the UK tax rules in straightforward language and with many practical examples. It is a notable achievement to put incomprehensible tax legislation into such readily understandable terms; anyone advising on wealth management will find this to be an invaluable guide to the subject”.
MALCOLM GUNN, CONSULTANT, SQUIRE, SANDERS & DEMPSEY

“ The author demonstrates considerable skill in explaining complicated tax rules in a manner that makes them easy to assimilate and understand. The book contains Chapter summaries, useful Appendices and numerous worked examples, which provide a very clear, helpful explanation of some difficult tax rules. The book’s contents cover wide areas of the tax system, and yet provide sufficient technical depth to be a valuable point of reference for those involved in wealth management and financial planning”.
MARK McLAUGHLIN, MARK McLAUGHLIN ASSOCIATES, MANAGING EDITOR OF TAXATIONWEB

“ A valuable new text explaining the tax treatment applicable to financial planning products and strategies for UK domiciled persons (UK resident or expats) and non domiciled UK residents. This book will be of interest to a wide readership ranging from students of law and tax, the interested layman seeking in depth knowledge and professionals including solicitors, accountants, financial planners, private bankers and trustees. Malcolm is to be commended on distilling a vast amount of detailed material into a logical and well ordered framework”.
ANDREW PENNEY, MANAGING DIRECTOR, ROTHSCHILD TRUST CORPORATION LTD

“ Malcolm Finney’s book is stimulating, innovative and refreshingly practical. Anyone wanting either a high–level understanding of tax principles involved in wealth management or a deeper insight should read this book”.
JACOB RIGG, HEAD OF POLICY, SOCIETY OF TRUST AND ESTATE PRACTITIONERS, STEP WORLDWIDE

This book gives comprehensive coverage to the complicated subject of taxation for Financial Planners. Many clients increasingly have diverse and complex needs often spanning different fiscal regimes and to meet their goals and objectives need a greater level of support. This book will be very valuable to all those Financial Planners who wish to extend their learning and reference and desire to meet the needs of such clients.”
STEPHER ARTHUR, BARRISTER, LINCOLN’S INN

The recent Finance Acts 2006 and 2008 have changed significantly the tax rules in key areas applicable to wealth management planning. All these changes and their implication (and more) are covered in this book.

“A comprehensive bang–up–to–date tour de force with practical examples to help and guide with all tax problems for the international client with UK connections. My copy is to be kept by my desk at all times.”––Stephen Arthur, Barrister, Lincoln’s Inn

“The author demonstrates considerable skill in explaining complicated tax rules in a manner that makes them easy to assimilate and understand. The everyday, ‘jargon free’ language of this book, coupled with the lack of references to legislation, make it very easy to read and digest. The book contains Chapter summaries, useful Appendices and numerous worked examples, which provide a very clear, helpful explanation of some difficult tax rules. The book’s contents cover wide areas of the tax system, and yet provide sufficient technical depth to be a valuable point of reference for those involved in wealth management and financial planning.”––Mark McLaughlin, Mark McLaughlin Associates, Managing Editor of TaxationWeb

This book will be of interest to a wide readership ranging from students of law and tax, the interested layman seeking in depth knowledge and professionals including solicitors, accountants, financial planners, private bankers and trustees. The value of this book is it brings all elements of personal financial planning together in one volume and is written in a lucid clear style with practical examples included at every step to illustrate the points being made. Of particular interest is the updated coverage including the complex rules on inheritance tax and trusts in FA 2006 and non domiciliaries in FA 2008. Malcolm is to be commended on distilling a vast amount of detailed material into a logical and well ordered framework.”––Andrew Penney, Managing Director, Rothschild Trust Corporation Ltd

5.0 out of 5 stars wealth management planning: the uk tax principles, 19 Feb 2009
As one of the endorsors to the book said, this book is a real "tour de force".

I purchased the book as I had previously purchased books by this author which were always very easy to read and understand, yet definitive, and I hadn't found a tax text which covered wealth management in a practical yet rigorous manner. The numerous practical examples littered throughout the text are excellent and put the theory into a practical perspective.

Inheritance and capital gains tax are each covered in great detail and I particularly liked the chapters which looked at the tax treatment of onshore and offshore trusts.

Some of my clients are non-UK domiciled and the book provides a splendid explanantion of the complex impact of the Finance Act 2008.

Any financial adviser or general tax practitioner or student of finance/tax is unlikely to find a better text on the tax issues of wealth management planning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wealth Management Planning: The UK Tax Principles, 15 Feb 2009
For anyone involved in providing wealth mangement advice to clients this book is a must, although in view of its approach the book is also eminently suitable for students of taxation.

Despite the complexity of taxation the approach of the author makes the topics covered readily understandable, posssibly because of the numerous practical examples provided throughout the book.

What is surprising is the range of topics covered; i found the explanation of the different types of property ownership particularly helpful as was the discussion on trusts and their tax treatment.

The book is completely up to date and is to be kept so by the use of the accompanying website.

All in all an excellent book which given the price of most tax text books also represents excellent value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 10 Feb 2009
By Xavier Gouveia (Jersey, CI) - See all my reviews
Having worked in the banking sector, dealing with wealthy private clients for the last seventeen years, I have always found the area of taxation particularly tricky especially in relation to non-UK domiciliaries. Tax is a vast subject requiring specialist knowledge and not one it is advisable to dip into without a firm grasp. It is however, almost impossible to be involved in the private client arena without at least a basic understanding of the topic and Finney's book makes this very complicated area a lot easier for the layperson.

Most tax books either tend to be too simplified or far too complicated for anyone working in finance and needing an understanding of UK taxation, but ths book with its numerous examples and uncomplicated language does a very good job of giving the reader a thorough understanding.

Particular emphasis is on the substantial rule changes introduced in 2008 and I would highly recommend the book to anyone who has dealings with the financial affairs of foreigners residing in the UK, or wishes to get to grips with taxation as it relates to the individual.
