Product Description

In We Are Celtic Supporters Richard Purden examines what created the culture, ideas and beliefs around Celtic football club. In new and exclusive interviews with supporters, he explores the Celtic way of life and the rich traditions that give context to much of the support while deconstructing some myths along the way.

As a travelling supporter he visits a variety of fans in locations such as New York, Spain, Germany, Italy and various parts of the UK. He talks to well-known Celtic supporters such as James MacMillan about the often misrepresented Catholic roots, to Pat Nevin about why he fell out of love with the club and to a number of well-known rock 'n' rollers such as Noel Gallagher, Bobby Gillespie and Johnny Marr.

We Are Celtic Supporters gives the inside story of how major events in Celtic's history have shaped the identity of the fans, and what it really means to follow this unique football club.

Be warned: this is not your average football book. In this book, Purden explores various aspects of the club from its charitable Christian roots in Glasgow's East End to its globetrotting successes on the football field. Through a series of interviews with prominent fans such as Rod Stewart, James MacMillan and Andrew O'Hagan the author reveals the fascinating truth of a Marist Brother who formed a club to benefit poverty stricken immigrants, which then became inextricably linked with the identity of the community, not just in Glasgow, but throughout the diaspora.
The romantic worldwide attraction of the club is demonstrated through interviews with fans in New York, Germany and Spain. Each provides a different perspective on why, in the age of the footballing megastar, Celtic still has the power to connect with fans and stir the passions. In interviews with musicians such as Jim Kerr, Eddi Reader, Noel Gallagher and Bobby Gillespie, each espouse the appeal of a team which has always held to an anti-fascist agenda and demonstrated socially inclusive policies.
Throughout the book Purden's narrative style is relaxed and conversational and the prose is by turns informative and poetic, as required when discussing an emotive subject such as Celtic. It is difficult not to be moved by the story of a club which has gained near mythical status; an underdog which became the first British team to win the European Cup consisting of players all born within a thirty mile radius of Glasgow.
This is not just a book for Celtic fans; this is a book for all football fans. If you want to read about statistics and multi-million pound transfer deals then look elsewhere. If you want to read a socio-historical document which stands as a testament to a cultural phenomenon then look no further. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Why did 80,000 Celtic supporters travel to Seville, when only 25,000 had tickets? Why do all the cool musicians support Celtic? Why do Polish, Somalia and Bangladeshi immigrants find them selves drawn to Celtic Park? This book explores the cultural, political and emotional allure of Celtic FC. A must read for the supporter and for those who wonder why Celtic is much more than just a football club.
