From Amazon.co.uk

This Italian comedy from director Nanni Moretti opened the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. Disaster strikes the Vatican when Cardinal Melville, the newly elected Pope, suffers a panic attack just before addressing the people of Rome and is unable to face his public. Desperate times call for desperate measures, as a brilliant (but atheist) psychoanalyst is brought in to help the Pope confront his fears. With stunning imagery and an outstanding lead performance from Michel Piccoli, We Have a Pope puts a hilarious spin on the inner workings of this notoriously secretive order. Extras: Q&A with director Nanni Moretti filmed on-stage at the London BFI Film Festival 2011

Product Description

Nanni Moretti directs this gently comical Italian drama about a newly elected Pope struggling to come to terms with his new role. French actor Michel Piccoli stars as the bemused Pontiff, whose quiet contemplative demeanour gives way to performance anxiety verging on hysteria as he finds himself overwhelmed by the pressure of the job and the vast crowds of Catholics gathering outside the papal palace to hear him speak. A psychoanalyst (played by the director) is brought in to help, but with the usual subjects of sexual desire and unfulfilled fantasies strictly off-limits, there is only so much he is able to do.

A pope that does not want to be pope and a atheistic psychologist inside the vatican make a great movie to watch.

The movie is funny and serious. The slow pace of the directing creates a relaxed mood and the audience can focus on

the emotions of the characters.

I am studying Italian, and as this film has subtitles (can be switched off course) it helps me improve on the language I have learnt, so far. It made me laugh out loud in places. I'd recommend it to those who are studying Italian, or can speak some Italian, or don't mind subtitles. The story line and ending, was not what I expected, which kept me watching till the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars SUPERBLY ACTED BUT OVERLONG 5 July 2012

This could have been better film if it didn't drag on for too long. A very sincere and moving film .Why did the director include lengthy scenes with the cardinals playing sport? It detracted from the story and slowed it down too much.Without them it would have been a much better film. Performances are brilliant especially in the leading roles.Worth a look once but not a film to see again.
