4.0 out of 5 stars ...three go mad in Estonia... 6 Feb 2010
By Mr. H TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:MP3 Download
The Humans are an odd little cove. A project that was first put together to perform new songs at a series of concerts in Estonia, they comprise Chris Wong, Bill Rieflin and one Toyah Willcox.

After the shows were completed, they went into the studio to record the material, before heading back to Estonia to perform them again. Which is a curious, yet perversely intriguing way of doing things.

Most of the music comprises dense, electronic landscapes, with the clipped, robotic voice of Toyah acting as an additional instrument. It's certainly interesting, and bears more than a passing resemblance to solo David Sylvain. Which is a good thing. 'Twisted Soul' is probably the closest thing to anything conventional, and acts as a good entry point. Me? I liked it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely brilliant and extremely annoying 22 Jun 2011
Format:MP3 Download
Three songs on this album are exceptional, the others, not so much. I find the extremes of music to be a bit jarring and frankly its a tad pretentious. That said three, no four songs i love and that i play to death. There is something about Toyahs new band that makes me want to tell them not to be so earnest and chill it down a bit. Quicksilver, Icarus and This Belongs To You are outstanding, an album full of the vibe that these songs produce would truly be exceptional. However i cant help but feel that the remainder of this album has disappeared up it own nether region as did the other album called This Fragile Moment which i found it to be utterly self indulgent.
So, Humans, more of the superbly crafted stuff and more excellent lyrics and vocals from Toyah and altogether less of the self indulgent amateur sounding stuff and you will have cracked it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic... 29 Mar 2010
Format:MP3 Download
I heard on the radio that Toyah had a new band, and a few days later a friend asked if I wanted to see them play live, so I thought 'yeah, what the hell', and we trundled along...

Toyah's voice is amazing - nothing like her early hits, far richer and expressive, and she's still a whirling dervish who concentrated on each song then beamed like a child once she's finished. The songs and musicianship are great - these guys played amazingly (as you'd expect for musicians who can keep up with Robert Fripp), I loved the two basses being played against each other (though Chris Wong is also an amazing guitarist), and I came out of the concert blown away by how good the band and music was...so I bought the album...and it was just like seeing the concert again!

I can highly recommend this album!!!
