Product Description

Lukas Moodysson returns with this raucous coming-of-age comedy set in 1982, Stockholm. Klara and Bobo are united as misfits by their love of music. Ignoring their own lack of talent and the people who tell them punk is dead, the pair form their own band with shy classmate Hedvig.

In between fighting over boys and provoking their metal-head nemeses, the three begin preparing for their debut live gig. Brilliantly funny and life-affirming, We Are The Best! appeals to the teenager in everyone.

About the Director

Lukas Moodysson was born on January 17, 1969 in Malmö, Skåne län, Sweden as Karl Frederik Lukas Moodysson. He is a writer and director, known for Show Me Love (1998), Lilya 4-Ever (2002) and Together (2000). He has been married to Coco Moodysson since 1994. They have three children.

4.0 out of 5 stars We are Sub Optimal - at best 12 Sep 2014
By Tommy Dooley TOP 100 REVIEWER
This is the latest film from Lukas Moodysson who brought us the wonderful `Together' and `Lilya 4 Ever'. This is based on a comic book written by his wife Coco. It is set in 1982 Stockholm. Two friends who want to stand out from the crowd decide they want to be in a punk band. This is when New Wave and New Romantics had taken over as the fashionistas choice and punk was doing a slow swan dance with a few die hard bands hanging on to the vestiges of what had once been. These are Bobo and Klara and they are thirteen year old girls.

They persuade a talented yet lonely fellow pupil to join them - this is Hedvig- who has an over controlling mother who is a devout Christian. They set about changing the World in their own way by swooning over a local punk boy act and writing a song that criticises the games department (I did that in one of my punk bands - `The Casstrations' - we were bleedin awful by the way with titles like `Expressive Anomie' and `Death of a Hippy') still I digress `Hate Sport' becomes their mantra and is interchangeable with anything else they decide to hate. Well they have their ups and downs and this is their story.

As a comic it was probably quite good, but as a film it seems to be lacking the weight of Moodysson's earlier work. The girls are all very good in their roles especially Liv LeMoyne as Hedvig, but the story is too lightweight. The girls are just having fun with the music and the whole punk ethos seems to be missing and it just becomes a fashion accessory- which is probably all that is left of punk in the modern day. That aside there are some pretty good songs here and some entertaining moments and I did quite enjoy it - not Moodyson's best film but still head and shoulders above an awful lot of the competition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Ghost Town 20 July 2014
A film laced with charm, humour and superbly developed characters, as a study of childhood and growing up, this underrated masterpiece is on a par with the mighty Boyhood. Like Ghost Town, We Are The Best fleshes out the engaging animated novel with energy and imagination. You'll love the three young girls and forgive their everyday foibles, such is their sincerity and freshness. Unlike the Hollywood feelgood style of School Of Rock, these girls know their music is less than brilliant. The point is that they choose to play it - an act of simple rebellion that informs their identities and shapes their lives and attitudes. The Scandinavian punk soundtrack drives along the lovely narrative and allows the characters to breathe. Beautiful film making.

2.0 out of 5 stars Irritating 7 Sep 2014
I tried really hard to like this film having read all the good reviews. Good reviews are generally a good guide and I tend to like quirky films rather than mainstream "hits". I watched it for 20 minutes and ditched it as unbelievably irritating and tedious . I decided it was only suitable for young teens who may relate to it. The next day I tried again as I thought how could I have such a different opinion from others who rave over it. I gave it another 40 minutes and ditched it again. I get that the three girls were trying to " find themselves" but found the process just too annoying for words and not, for me, entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars LUKAS MOODYSSON...LOOK HIM UP. 18 Jun 2014
By Hitch22
Lukas Moodysson's previous films, Lilya-4-Ever, Together, Show Me Love are Ken-Loach-Like-Perfect in my eyes and he tends to get the most amazing of performances from his, often young, unknown actors...he certainly did here, the performances are truly wonderful. For me, LM film releases are anticipated like Beatles /Ken Loach / Mike Leigh / Radiohead / "Alan Partridge" / Stewart Lee / Richard Dawkins releases. When the film ends I'd be surprised if you don't want to rush out immediately and share it with everyone you love or like. Subsequently if you do,and they happen to dislike this film, drop them...they cannot be human or have ever been young.
