Product Description

Product Description

Powerful two-CD set celebrating Eliza Carthy's first twenty-one years as a professional recording musician. One of this country's finest singers and songwriters and a member of a great musical dynasty, Eliza Carthy is a peerless and pioneering talent. She is the winner of 2 Mercury Prize nominations, several BBC Radio Folk Awards and innumerable other accolades. During her career she has performed and recorded with a dazzlingly diverse array of artists including Billy Bragg, Paul Weller, The Wainwrights, Richard Thompson, Bryan Ferry, Nick Cave and Joan Baez. To mark 21 years as a professional musician, Eliza's long-standing label, Topic Records, is releasing 'Wayward Daughter', a career-spanning best of double album, with 31 tracks drawn from her diverse and award-winning back-catalogue including traditional and self-penned material. There are also a couple of live tracks, samples of a few of her many collaborations with other artists - and previously unreleased material too.

"Wayward Daughter is a glorious celebration of Carty's two decades plus as a folk musician underlining the impact she's had on the genre. Dad and mother Norma Waterson may already be legends, but Eliza is well on the way to attaining equally lofty status" -- Record Collector * * * *

"The trail of a folk visionary across 22 albums in 21 years. Eliza Carthy did more than anyone to revolutionise and rid folk music of the staid, cliche-ridden images stifling it through the 90's. Listening to the sheer range of styles and consistently inventive ideas pursued through this thoughtfully constructive precis of her 21 year career, it's easy to understand why" -- Colin irwin, Mojo * * * *

A more fearsome performer than mum or dad, or indeed anyone else on the folk scene she s helped to galvanise...a rich primer of a singular career - 8/10 Uncut

Her vision remains absolutely faithful to the story and expresses the song s essential emotions. She accomplishes this with wit and exuberance And this is her genius.. Every home should have a wayward daughter -- ***** Songlines Magazine

It s a proud career CV but more importantly it stands powerfully alone on its own considerable merits vibrant, modern and relevant - fRoots Magazine

"Listening to this compilation from start to finish, I found myself mesmerised by her interpretation of traditional songs. Not only is Eliza a superb singer in the traditional mould, but also she brings a depth and complexity to her interpretations of traditional songs that few can achieve. The excitement for me comes from what will arise from Eliza Carthy's artistry in the coming years. The Wayward Daughter is anything but, and her journey thus far is well worth experiencing - and her future beckons".

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as it should be... 21 Aug 2013
Format:Audio CD
I'm a big fan of Eliza Carthy and I'd recommend the Topic 'definitive' single disc as a better starting point for anyone interested in her work - this 'Wayward' compilation omits the stunning 'Fisher Boy' which has to be one of Eliza's finest performances and should be in any collection of hers.

She's undoubtedly at her best seen in her live performances and if you haven't caught her on stage then you're in for a treat. This is a decent collection, but I's suggest the single Topic disc as a better budget first buy. And then enjoy the rest of her albums (my own favourite is the under-rated 'Rough Music' which is perhaps a little less instant than some of her efforts, but the performances are simply magnificent).

Oh and surely they could have come up with a more appealing cover?

5.0 out of 5 stars just class 29 Oct 2013

Step one copy the cds. And put them in the car, leave the originals at home. That way whenever, as usually happens, the CDs get destroyed in the car player you still have the originals. Believe me this is one you're going to want around for a while.
Incredible music, well put together beautifully sung and no bagpipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very tasty compilation... 30 Oct 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm not really a 'fan' of folk music, but I appreciate quite a few of the instruments used in that genre, I've really liked Eliza since 'Red', am a big fan of Imagined Village, and have seen her several times in concert. So it's really nice to hear this collection which is classy in it's mix/compilation - especially as the whole album highlights her fabulous voice.Even the packaging is interesting, funny, as always, with a brilliant title - especially as, at last, Eliza is 'developing' folk music....I look forward to more 'beats' from her... and Thankyou....

4.0 out of 5 stars Elisa at her best 16 Jan 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a retospective, it gives a good spectrum of her long career to date, I have a few CD's in this line and this easily matches up. Sound and recording quality is what you would expect from a modern studio and live album.

Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
An amazing 31 tracks for starters! A huge range of material, which although I have many of her albums there was still plenty new.
Perfect celebration of 20 years of music from the girl who relaunced the folk revival that is responsible for the drive of the folk scene today.
