4.0 out of 5 stars Good when taken on its own terms..., 7 Aug 2005

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Anybody who bought 69 Love Songs and is hoping for more of the same with this set will be, initially at least, disappointed. Sung throughout both albums by Sunsan Anway and preseented in a wall-of-sound-done-cheap approach, the first impression is of murk. But when you begin to listen to it on its own terms, then it starts to appeal. Both albums were very short and you have about one hours music here...

The songs are good and Anway's voice makes sense once you get used to it. One further oddity to get used to is that the songs are written from a male point of view, but sung by a woman. Odd, but easy to get used to.

Less easy to get used to is the four and a half minutes of silence that separates the two album. Track 11 is, for some reason, their tribute to the notorious 4.33. As it is a seperate track, you can skip it, but it is irritating.

This is not Magnetic Fields' greatest record. It doesn't have the charm and appeal of 69 Love Songs, but then few albums do. But it is an enjoyable set and well worth the asking price...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good songs versus a lo fi wall of sound., 31 Oct 2004
By Oscillator (Carluke) - See all my reviews
With a production in thrall to Phil Spector and early Brian Wilson, Stephen Merritt's first two Magnetic Fields album already show him as an accomplished songwriter. While the constantly excessive reverb and the sometimes cheesy electronic instrumentation make it hard to listen to there are very good songs on here. Whilst this CD contains two albums in truth it is hard to distinguish between them with Distant Plastic Trees arguably having more variety. Susan Anway's vocals are fine - but they do have a hard time battling against the wall of sound(lo fi Casiotone version.) Nevertheless, after a few plays it does get easier to pick out the songs from the murk. It probably sounds good on a cheap transistor radio but you don't hear stuff like this on the radio so we'll never know. A worthwhile start to a great run of albums.

3.0 out of 5 stars the wrong voice, 27 Aug 2001
By A Customer
If it wasn't for the Anway's vocals throughout the entire 2 albums, this would be very very good. Everything else released by the magnetic fields has had a variety of singers including stephin merritt and claudia gonson. these are essential in any magnetic fields album. apart from this, the actual music and lyrics are on the same leve as 'the house of tomorrow' and 'holiday' (that is a good thing, for those who don't know)

This is one to buy.
